I'd like to find a place that has a lot of used or vintage gear somewhere in So.Cal. I'm near Palm Springs but will be going to San Diego soon and could visit LA if needed.
I'd like to pick up some cheaper used gear like speakers and an amp for an extended stay down here. I like to try classic gear and I'd like to find a place to look at it first and see it in person. Also would like to dicker with cash and avoid shipping. I'm looking at craigslist, but wondered if other sources existed.
In Seattle there's a place called Hawthorne Stereo with tons of cool used gear. Also Portland has Echo Audio which also has a lot of stuff on hand. sometimes new, sometimes consignment. It would be surprising LA or SD didn't have similar places but I haven't seen it yet.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

In addition to Stereo Design, which has the largest selection, Stereo Unlimited on Sports Arena Blvd. always has some pieces.
With the closing of Jeff's Sound Values a few years ago we've lost our two largest used dealers. So unfortunately other than the two suggested it seems to be hit or miss at the larger thrift stores.

Craigslist, Thrift shops.
...on Craig's List. Never dealt with him.
And yet despite the look on my face, you're still talking.
Yeah, I bought a NAD CD player from him for $50. Excellent condition, works well. His living room is his showroom. Full of speakers and receivers. More mid-fi than hi-fi and all solid state, no tubes. I certainly would buy from him again.
Yes, the ADS L710s he has were on my list. Look very clean.
In San Diego I recommend you check out Stereo Design .. A great place and they've been around for years. They also have a nice selection of used gear.
If you decide to check them out note their hours (Wed-Sat).
Hmm... the Maggies are gone (III and DWM). But the Pioneer Kuro plasma TV is still there, reduced to $1975. More than I paid for mine, but then it's the only TV that appreciates in value.
I bought several pieces of gear from them over the years, including a used Dynakit Stereo 70 and new Mini Maggies. Highly recommended.
I bought a "lowly" Audio Research LS3 from them sometime around 1992. They treated me like an absolute KING as I auditioned it: gave me a listening room to myself for as long as I needed, and would have let me take it home. They also swapped the faceplate of the unit they had in stock from black to silver with black handles.
Great people to do business with & they had a pretty cool used selection.
