Damn, damn, damn. And double damn.
CT was the best. The Best. He was smart, funny, interesting, friendly,
a great teacher, a primo scat singer (he could keep up with Ella easily),
a decent conventional singer, his mumbles routines are legendary, a great
entertainer, and above all, a superb trumpeter/flugelist.
If you are conversant with the top jazz trumpeters of the 20th century,
you know that he was in the top 6 or 8 best ever, right there with Louis
Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Edison,
Bix Biederbecke, and just a couple of others.
I have memories of concerts he played in Colorado in the 1980s and early
1990s. Playing and scatting duets with Snooky Young at 230 in the morning; playing a duet with Monty Alexander and both having more fun
than the law should ever have allowed; doing his mumbles routines; playing
duets with himself on trumpet and flugelhorn; and playing, of all things,
a short length of ... wait for it ... garden hose!
I will miss him. He was a force of nature. One of the finest jazz
musicians ever. Ever.
Thanks for everything, Clark. You made my life better. A higher
compliment I cannot pay to anyone. And make that angel band swing even
harder!

Why rate musicians that play at such a level? Must be an American thing...
Great tribute!
Thank you. I loved the man, and I loved his playing.
