There are very few speakers that can reproduce a squarewave. See fig.8
at the link below.
But I feel that the step responses I publish in Stereophile's speaker
reviews - see fig.7 at the same URL below - are a much more informative
means of probing the temporal aspects of performance than a squarewave.

Hi and thanks a lot for the very valuable advice
Therefore the SW response test seems to have a raison d'etre. Very good !
And thanks a lot for performing it.
I read always the Stereophile's Labs pages with the greatest interest.
I suspect that a speaker/driver good at reproducing a SW could be also good with a step signal, but i could be wrong of course.
Thank you very much again.
Kind regards,

That's correct, but the step response is much easier to interpret.

John,I'm glad you have mentioned this, as i find step response result open to interpretation as to good , ok, not so good vs SW. ..
Here are 2 , that are poor IMO, while one is better in the time domain than the other , this alone will not predicate good or bad sonics ...

Hi and thank you very much again Mr. Atkinson
I like measurements a lot
So i appreciated very highly this interview of yours to Mr. John Dunlavy
" ... no loudspeaker can sound more accurate than it measures ... "
Unfortunately i did not have the opportunity to listen to any of his creations not very common in Italy unfortunately
But i am quite sure the sound must be phenomenal
and accurate that i like also.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg
