It is not pretty. Way too much treble. Esp solid-state systems. Ear-bleeding agony.
Follow Ups:
Knew a bass player who used a 250 w monoblock krell for his Axe.
A little pedaling for a touch of effects. I've seen big SAE amps used for bass. And I've seen SUNN and Ampeg SVT's used for subwoofers, in hi-fi setups.
Ever seen a Fender 400PS in action? What a beast! And those folded horn speakers... WOW!

Bass players were much more "audiophile" in their tastes. Lead players wanted a certain "grundge" or "grind" on their sound. Interesting.
Real "old" bass players liked the humongus Mac 2300 ss amp, 300 watts per channel.... Broke your back moving it though
Had an acquaintance who played bass in a blues trio and his sound was all Ampeg, he loved his amp.
