and some other incidents...
-----------------------------------
"The first Rock & Roll song with distortion is also generally cited as the first Rock & Roll song period-Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" Guitar player Willie Kizart's amp either fell from the roof of the car on Highway 61, or got damaged by rain, resulting in a lot of distortion/fuzz. Sam Phillips liked the sound and insisted they record with the damaged amp. "
----------------------------------------------
And Dave Davies of the Kinks
"he story Dave tells in his book "Kinked" is the speaker was torn by accident and he couldn't afford another. Necessity is the mother of invention, remember? "
----------------------------------
I would say that Duane Eddy and/or Link Wray both added to that distorted sound too...
Follow Ups:
Some of his 1950's era recordings were done with using a tweed era Fender Bassman that had one speaker with a torn cone. Think that Buddy Guy also recorded using that amp.
Many stories of damaged amps used to generate "that" tone. Eddie Van Halen used a Variac on VH first album, to dial down the input voltage and get his "starved" tone, out of the Marshall he used.
Guitarists are noted for fiddling with studio equipment, searching for "that tone."
So, thank you for dropping some knowledge...
From running live sound and a little studio work...the happy accidents can be very magical...
The Beatles being the Beatles, may have made it more main stream then even the Kinks...
Thanks again...
Mark
The Kinks song in question 'You Really Got Me' was No1 in the UK and Top10 in the US in '64.However the American Federation Of Musicians effectively banned The Kinks from performing live in the USA from '65 to '69 due to frequent on-stage fights between band members.

it was quickly stolen-borrowed-mimicked-copied or whatever and each new artist that did it was thought by their fans to be the OWNER of that lick, chop, sound or whatever. This has gone on since the first caveman beat two sticks together or rattled some bones....
