Hi
i spent some time listening some so called "techno drops" from youtube at average level
and now it seems that the sound is better (i.e. more clear)
Questions:
1) do you believe in break-in ?
2) do you think that some musics/sounds are more effective than others for break-in purpose ?
This would be a zero cost method
An example of the tracks listened in the link
Kind regards,

now that they're "pumped up", they're ready for anything.
Hi and yes it seems so
I think they have been left unused for long time
Before the "techno treatment" i was listening only to quiet music
Maybe this techno has woken them up a little more
Thanks
Kind regards,
bg
... silence seems most refreshing!
Hi ! eheheh maybe you are right
Surely these tracks move the woofers nicely and i seem to understand better dialogues when watching movies, a clear sign of low distortion in the midrange to me.
I should listen to the Purist Audio cd ... maybe i will like the sound it makes ?
Kind regards,
bg
Yes, I believe in break-in, it is critical for any gear.
It is quite possible that the techno tunes introduced certain frequencies and test tones not possible for "regular" music.
.....are you really saying "music"?

But, of course.
Hi and thanks but then this "sounds" quite important to me
When we agree that break-in is needed it is important the way this break-in is performed, isn't it ?
With some SW players is possible to play in loop one of this track or a selection of them
As i am in the process of testing different speakers to select the one that i like best i would do this carefully.
I am still not sure if it would be better shorter playback times at higher levels or longer times at normal levels.
Maybe both ?
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg

Most people got into high-end audio in the 90s. That was when popular music threw up on itself (grunge, lack of music videos, consolidation of media, refusal of CD prices to come down). So while regular folk were getting into high-end audio, all-electronic forms of music came of age. While we audiophiles were checking out myriad speakers, we learned that electronic music worked well in breaking in those speakers. One guy would take a new pair of speakers, and subject it to the usual audiophile fare. Another guy would take an identical pair of speakers, and subject it to techno, hi-NRG, thrash metal, europop, dance music, rap. The latter guy's pair of speakers would sound more open, accurate, transparent, and rhythmic.
As an audio reviewer, I have lived with dozens of speakers. Some were new, but most came from other audiophiles. When I receive these speakers, it is obvious to me that the previous users did not subject the speakers to popular music.
In the mid-90s, the PAD Burn-in CD cost over $100. You could get similar results, simply by using Robert Miles' Dreamland . Just put it on infinite repeat, for a day. In fact, that is one of the CDs I used to break in, among others, the Totem Element Fire. Other than DEEP bass, the broken-in Element Fire has proven to be self-effacingly neutral, accurately reflecting what is going on upstream.
After you properly break-in a speaker with popular music, return the speaker to its owner, and she will be amazed at what you did. She will get all excited about how her speaker now sounds less congested, boring, constipated, drowsy, and clumsy.
But we audiophiles have known for over 20 years, that electronic forms of music do a better job of breaking-in speakers.

I was hoping you would chime-in Lummy!
The PAD disc is one of the very few that I do not own (yet).
I have oftened wondered why it is priced over $100 ???
In the mid-90s, CD duplication wasn't cheap. PAD probably did the math, and figured that they had to charge $135 retail, at certain sales targets, in order to get past the break-even point.
Don't overdo the PAD System Enhancer. If you leave it playing for days on end, that'll lead to a dull, airless, rolled-off up top sound.
Yes, I also have and use other burn-in discs. The frequency sweeps do a good job of exercising speakers.
Much Thanks! Lummy-
I have so many "test" discs, that the PAD, is one of the very few I do not own. It is on my list to buy. I wanted some insight into it prior to any purchase!
Hi and thanks a lot for the valuable confirmation and suggestion
So it is a nice treatment for speakers. Good to know because i was not sure of which component was the cause of the change in sound
I will look for the cd mentioned
Thanks again
Kind regards,

As genungo pointed out, as experience has showed and as irrational as it may sound.
Which component are you breaking in?

Hi and thanks for the kind and valuable suggestion
I will buy the cd
Actually i was listening these techno tracks from youtube through the speakers
Then i switched to a normal dvd and the voices sound more clear, i can understand better the words while before there was a little distortion in the midrange
Thanks again
Kind regards,

It has a lot of pops, trebley stuff and such on it. It's very effective. It also has a "rejuvenating" cut on it that is similar. There are some similarities to that techno track.
Jack
Hi and thanks a lot for the valuable suggestion
I will try one for sure

Some of the vendors on Amazon will ship to Italy (plus there is Amazon/UK).
If you do pick it up be careful to begin its use @ a very low volume setting until you become familiar with the various tracks (and how loud they get).
I like it because it's quick and effective (play it a few times every six months, or so).
When I used to make system changes often I would play it once with each change.
Hi thanks a lot and very interesting again
This cd has been already recommended so it must be very effective
I will buy also this one
I am sold now on this break-in thing
Thanks again
Kind regards,

As recently as a few weeks ago I ripped my PAD System Enhancement Rev-B CD to myPC so that I could put it on a Thumb Drive to use in my music system w/o having to use a disc player. EAC did'nt preview this disc's cover art,but instead gave a Cover of a Techno music CD!As bizzare it would seem,it really would'nt be a big surprise to me if "Bootlegged" copies of "System Enhancer Rev-B" existed as a "Techno" release
(Although,it does'nt appear to be this disc from what I heard)

Hi and thanks and yes i know the cd mentioned, quite famous i think it got some prize ?
I wonder if these tracks can have a similar effect after all
They are quite energic
Unfortunately i cannot raise the volume as i would like for the neighbours
Kind regards,

Perhaps it's exercising the speaker surrounds, who the hell knows?
Hi and i think this could be the "secret"
The speakers have been left unused for some time
I am using them since two weeks but it would be nice to have a tool to accelerate the break-in process
and it is also quite convenient
There are tons of these techno tracks on youtube
Thanks again
Kind regards,
bg
No one can say for sure what happened. But, it's possible that your Techno music produced an effect similar to that produced by the Densen DeMagic system de-magnetization disc...
Hi I confirm words are more understandable
And not bad at all
i am playing with a cheap cambridge audio 340 and tannoy 622 (two centers used as l and r)
thanks
Kind regards,
bg
Try playing the same Techno music once again in the future, after one or two weeks goes by.If the music continues to produce a similar effect in your system, then I'd say that it is highly unlikely that your imagination is deceiving you.

Hi and thanks for the advice
I will do it for sure ... it is free
until they will close the accounts maybe
Kind regards,

I think that when you went back and listened to some actual music on your system, you thought you heard an improvement. Your speakers were probably thankful too.

Hi and thanks a lot for the advice
by the way what is your position on break-in? Do you think is for real ?
Thanks

In this hobby there is always someone who believes "everything" is "Snake
Oil". Be happy with what "You" discover.
(So who's to SSSSsay "Snake Oil" has'nt any benefits!)(Don't sweat the
small details if you're not spending big $$$)
Hi and i think that sometimes there are indeed phenomena that occur even simple and what is failed is the analysis of the causes
For instance i had bad speakers cable with low quality connectors
Using simple and not very expensive plugs i like the sound better
They are also very convenient to use
I think that the better contact can have helped the sound
In this case i think that woofers suspensions were a little rigid because left unused for long time
Kind regards,
bg
