I had an AH! 99 for many years, but no experience with the 4000. However, back when the 99 was current, one of the complaints about it was that the output voltage was set too high from the factory. AH! took that criticism to heart and lowered the output voltage somewhat on the later production units. My point is that in the 99 there is a pair of trim pots that allow you turn the output voltage per channel up or down. Wondering if it is the same setup in the 4k and possibly you have one pot turned up too high, or one pot not turned up high enough.Edit: added link to Dick Olsher review of the 4k. In it he speaks about output voltages and how to change them.
Edit #2: Removed the Dick Olsher link and replaced it with instructions from AH! about adjusting output voltage on the 4000. Almost exactly half way done the page you'll find a heading of "Adjusting the output voltage of your AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000". Hope this helps.

+1 I have the same unit. There are 2 trim pots that are adjustable with a hex tool....the same one used to adjust tuner coils.
Thanks for posting.....I'll double check this as well. I have the solder pads. I know I actually changed this at some point years ago...at the time I must have somehow not heard the inbalance until recently and then hooked up the field recorder and low and behold...there it was.

Hopefully it is something simple like the output volts. Good luck. I still have my AH! 99 as a backup. Liked it so much that when time came to replace it I upgraded to one of Herman's newer designs, the Primaluna Prologue Classic CD - a killer machine.
Hopefully I can squeak some life out of this one. I really like the way it sounds, so why change a good thing.
