In my systems, the display is not in the way of preventing me from using 3 identical speakers for L/C/R because the sound is more important to me than the picture.
Follow Ups:
Kal, please explain how your 3 identical speakers are set up so they don't interfere with the picture. Are they small enough to reside below or above the screen, or do you use an acoustically transparent projection screen?
The complaint about low level for dialog compared to other sounds can be caused by a processor set for center channel when there is no center channel. Setting center channel to off in the menu usually cures that problem.

In one system, there is no display at all.
In the other, the PDP is just above the three floor-standers for L/C/R.
Hi and this is very interesting
Does a really acoustically transparent projection screen exist ?
if so this is really the way to do things for me
I would love to have this possibility
Thanks for the advice.
Kind regards,

I think acoustically transparent is a relative term.
BTW, we have a 6.2 setup, but I rarely turn on the amps for the rear channels*. Maybe there's more content for the rears now, but in the past it seems mostly limited to flyovers. For music, I mostly use stereo, occasionally 4.2; for DirecTV HD-DVR and Blu-ray, 4.2 is always on.

* I disconnected the trigger from the preamp to those amps
Hi again and thanks a lot for the interesting advice
I can only image that the experience to be surrounded by the sound is the ultimate ... like in a concert hall the sound comes from all around not only from the front of course
So stereo is limited i agree
But in a normal home condition the set-up can be a critical step
Thanks again
Kind regards,

Hi again and yes i understandBut do not get me wrong. I wanted just to mean that when listening to a movie on a stero system the dialogues are perfectly localized on the screen ... perfectly in the center without any sensation of hole in the middle.
My only issue is with the dialogues level ... much much lower that the effects
I often cannot understand the words ... so i have to raise the volume and then at the first effect ... bang !
that is my main problemBy the way you mean any kind of downmix of L, C and R channels to a basic stereo L and R has no hope to perform like a proper 3 front channels set-up.
I understand and i trust you completely.
Honestly i have very little experience of really high quality HT systems.
I agree completely on the necessity of rear channels ... that is clear.
But this center channel ... i am deeply uncomfortable with it.
I have to study more the processors anyway.
I wonder if some offering very refined downmix options exist.
That would be my ticket.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg
