Hi !
and you guys think that this is sane ???
If you use a single speaker you cannot have the left to right perspective
A group of people aligned on the front will sound like they are all in the same spot.
If you like this ... this is just silly.
I repeat ... two front channel are absolutely enough to cover completely the front without any hole.
I have heard a rock solid center image from good stereo systems with a seamless image from L to R
HT is maybe like the word say only good for theater where there is not only one sweet spot
But i am single ... and i watch movies alone
Kind regards,
bg

We aren't saying that you use only a center channel. There is a center channel AND left and right front channels. The dialogue does move left to right/right to left but it also is heard in the center. And then there are the surround speakers in the back (the number depending upon which system you are running).

Yes, you can have absolutely clear and stable central imaging with two front speakers to the point that, sometimes, one can question whether the center channel is on.
OTOH, if you compare the quality/timbre of that phantom central image with one delivered by a discrete center channel source and a dedicated speaker, you may find (as I did) that the discrete center is superior in every way.
Hi and thanks a lot for the interesting advice
Let me reply between the lines
" Yes, you can have absolutely clear and stable central imaging with two front speakers to the point that, sometimes, one can question whether the center channel is on "
i can say this ... when the stereo is well set-up sometimes i get the strong sensation that the sound is coming actually from the display that instead i use only as a monitor of course
The effect is so strong that the left and right speakers seem disconnected with the sound perfectly stuck in the screen/display
That is amazing

what scares me a little is center channel set-up process ... not that easy
Usually you have to put it below or above the screen
Using the same speaker for L, R and C could help
My approach would be anyway to use a processor able to mix the center channel with the L and R and go without the center channel
I do not know if this is possible
Of course rear speakers are needed for the rear sounds.
Thanks again.

In my systems, the display is not in the way of preventing me from using 3 identical speakers for L/C/R because the sound is more important to me than the picture.
Kal, please explain how your 3 identical speakers are set up so they don't interfere with the picture. Are they small enough to reside below or above the screen, or do you use an acoustically transparent projection screen?
The complaint about low level for dialog compared to other sounds can be caused by a processor set for center channel when there is no center channel. Setting center channel to off in the menu usually cures that problem.

In one system, there is no display at all.
In the other, the PDP is just above the three floor-standers for L/C/R.
Hi and this is very interesting
Does a really acoustically transparent projection screen exist ?
if so this is really the way to do things for me
I would love to have this possibility
Thanks for the advice.

I think acoustically transparent is a relative term.
BTW, we have a 6.2 setup, but I rarely turn on the amps for the rear channels*. Maybe there's more content for the rears now, but in the past it seems mostly limited to flyovers. For music, I mostly use stereo, occasionally 4.2; for DirecTV HD-DVR and Blu-ray, 4.2 is always on.

* I disconnected the trigger from the preamp to those amps
Hi again and thanks a lot for the interesting advice
I can only image that the experience to be surrounded by the sound is the ultimate ... like in a concert hall the sound comes from all around not only from the front of course
So stereo is limited i agree
But in a normal home condition the set-up can be a critical step
Thanks again

Hi again and yes i understandBut do not get me wrong. I wanted just to mean that when listening to a movie on a stero system the dialogues are perfectly localized on the screen ... perfectly in the center without any sensation of hole in the middle.
My only issue is with the dialogues level ... much much lower that the effects
I often cannot understand the words ... so i have to raise the volume and then at the first effect ... bang !
that is my main problemBy the way you mean any kind of downmix of L, C and R channels to a basic stereo L and R has no hope to perform like a proper 3 front channels set-up.
I understand and i trust you completely.
Honestly i have very little experience of really high quality HT systems.
I agree completely on the necessity of rear channels ... that is clear.
But this center channel ... i am deeply uncomfortable with it.
I have to study more the processors anyway.
I wonder if some offering very refined downmix options exist.
That would be my ticket.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg
