I've had tinnitus most of my adult life, to various degrees.. probably not severe but certainly annoying to an audiophile, and somewhat interfering with my ability to enjoy my system's sound.
In the last few years I've developed an occasional sound in my ears that reacts to higher volumes, especially with high frequency instruments and voices. When the music is soft, it's not there, but when it becomes louder, there is a slight overlay to the music that sounds kind of like the crinkling of aluminum foil (for want of a better description).
What I've discovered is, that when this condition appears, listening on headphones, instead of speakers, helps reduce the effect of the tinnitus, and let's me enjoy my music to a very high degree.
Just wanted to get that out there for other audiophiles with tinnitus.

you can check out deoxy.org but you can actually enhance your hearing so much you hear your brain frequencies. I know that is all it is and a change in perception and a change in consciousness helps a lot.
I have this ringing and humming especially when I go to sleep in quiet, when I realize I hear my brain pulsating electronic signals I can tune it off.
I've linked to a study which may or may not help, however if you look around you can see that the high pitched ringing is your brain electricity you are hearing.
call me crazy!
The tweeters in my speakers were replaced because of a whistle/crackle only to find that the new tweeters did the same. That led to listening to other systems, all of which provided the same whistle/crackle. It lasted for a few months, but has pretty much disappeared over the past couple weeks.
I have hearing aides, but seldom use them. Trying them while the noise was present seemed to decrease it somewhat. Interestingly, when I first used them they seemed to make no difference in hearing high notes. Now they do.
HD 650's get rid of it. Other headphones don't help and IEM's make it worse or bring it on.

Yes... I have the Sennheiser HD600's.
Seems to me you're darn lucky you got phones you like right out the gate.
After a year or so dipping my toes in the water I find headphone sound is all over the map. I got pretty good pair now but the ones I like the most I just got, $25CAN at The Source, I just like listening to them.

They just published my review! Click on "Read All 7 reviews" (under stars), mine is at top.

BTW as someone with now pretty mild tinnitus, I can say that when I look back over the decades there was something there all along and it was that which made me sensitive to the "sound". My theory anyway.
Personally I have to simply avoid turning up the dial on the ole stereo, not always successful lol
Now try some headphones at random in shops etc. and I guar some will make your tinnitus want to kill you, so again thank your lucky stars.
:)
I'm 75 and have had tinnitus as far back as I can remember. Loud noises excite it. I dont go to concerts or anywhere it's loud for any length of time. It takes two or three days for my tinnitus to return to its usual dull roar after being around loud noise. A Really loud sudden noise, hurts and gets a quick, angry reaction from me regardless of where I'm at or who with. If that is likely to happen I warn people. Listening in a quite environment at home is fine.

Dull roar doesn't sound that bad, higher freq, even if less pronounced, has potential for being far more annoying I would think.Refrigerator starting to attract more attention than tinnitus around here :) what, do they develop personalities when they hit 5? ... not main system floor lol

Thanks! for sharing.
I have a number of hearing inflictions: ski-slope audiogram, tinnitus, otosclerosis, and metal stepes bones as a surgical cure for the otoscelerosis.
I have never enjoyed music more in my life. It's your attitude, not your problems that matter most in audio and life.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
That's like trying to pretend a siren next to your ear is not there. Some days the tinnitus is loud enough to drown out the upper registers of what is being listened to. Doesn't keep me from listening and enjoying though.
"generally" not good for hearing especially when used a lot. Look at radio and other people that used them many years. It's not good. There are also many known substances and medicines that are bad or ototoxic which include caffeine, aspirin and many other pills especially oxycontin and other pain killers in that category. Sufferers of Tinnitus should avoid these. Wear earplugs when riding a motorcycle, using things with a motor and so on.

Phones mostly are a cause of tinnitus.
Have you an explanation as to what might be happening that makes having the sound pumped directly into the ear canal a smoother ride?
I have had tinnitus for at least a decade and I can tell you that in my case, and that this is prevalent with the bulk of people with tinnitus, the condition fluctuates and is way more noticeable when one is stressed
So make sure that you remain vigilant and that you always listen at a very reasonable level.
I'm not really sure why headphones reduce the effect of tinnitus for me. Perhaps it is the cancelling of room reflections associated with speakers (though my room is a dedicated listening room, and I think I've done a good job of reducing room reflections). Maybe the proximity of the sound through headphones tends to drown out the noise of tinnitus.
I don't ever listen to music loud, headphones or speakers... though I wish I could!
But, in any case, the difference is not subtle.
Have you tried turning your speakers sideways so they hit your ears more directly, mimicking the effect you are getting with headphones?
This getting old stuff really sucks. I wish I had taken the extended warranty. Ears, eyes, knees, blood sugar, etc. I wish I could recap and make it all go away.
Getting old does suck, but what's the alternative?
Solid state lites my tinnitus up like fireworks. My tube DIY stuff has been a godsend. I cringe when I go into a solid state household. It is really dramatic.
That is too funny!
