PayPal does offer you some protection against fraud and when you are dealing with a PayPal verified seller there is some hope of getting your money back in a dispute, so it's a lot less risky than sending a check or money order.
Ask the seller if they have feedback from Agon or eBay you can refer to. I think there are a lot of former or current Audiogon sellers who are testing the waters on the Audiomart sites, but don't have any feedback there yet.
If the seller really doesn't have any experience buying or selling used audio equipment (may be new to the hobby) then I would proceed with some caution. If the item is expensive, insist on a phone call and ask questions until you are comfortable. I personally avoid buying any really big ticket item from a first-time seller unless I can make the deal in person.
And avoid any deal on a popular item that looks like it's too good to be true.

My experience with paypal is that once the money is trasferred it is gone and not retractible and all i had about the other person was an email address. I wonder if a dealer would be willing to act as the shipper for $50 extra.
Fwiw I am buying some Klh ls50s with stands for $1200. Nothing earth shaking.
