Being able to understand foreign accents and love trying to guess where someone is from based on their accent. I am right well over 80% of the time probably 90. I never have a problem understanding English spoken by Indian or Pakistani folks but I have lots of practice. I do feel it is one of my God given gifts. When I get a foreign voice on the phone (vs face to face) I figure out where they are from and mention some piece of culturally related thing like food or music to make them comfortable.
This is still all odd to me as I am just horrible at understanding song lyrics! Terrible! As a kid some of my "misunderstanding" of vocalists were Homer Simpson-like. Led Zeppelin Heartbreaker is my classic. In fact just now on the Internet I went and looked at the lyrics for the first time. Wow, I mean I really haven't listened to it much since the 80's but I had no idea on a lot of what is said. My classic is here:
"""One thing I do have on my mind If you can clarify, please do"""
OK I got the first part but all I got for the second part as a kid (and I knew I was wrong) was: If you care about beef stew!
I was watching a James Brown documentary and they actually sub titled David Ray and Pee Wee who were speaking English! I thought geez, people can't understand them?Well, I grew up in the DC suburbs but then worked in DC including managing a Radio Shack at 14th and F St. and in a couple of other locations with a large percentage of black clientele. I then played on an all black fast pitch softball team for several years. My favorite ham radio frequency is one with 95% working class black men. They are more real and fun than most other hams which can often be grumpy old men.

Thanks, they mean a lot to me and I take pride/am grateful for my skill/gift. It has made many smiles face to face and I imagine some more via the phone I don't know about.
