"The BSR turntable, the Pickering stylus..."
GMAFB! Now Cramer is an audiophile? Even as a kid I knew that BSR and Pickering were, at best, low end mid-fi. I had better stuff when I was 11...

I actually did have a BSR and BSR speakers when I was 13. Sold the equalizer this week! Still have the speakers. 15" woofers. Fun for a 13 year old... and apparently Neil Young.

I thought Mr. Kramer did a really good job describing the PONO in layman's terms in the limited time he was allotted in the segment.
"It's like a long distance call versus a face to face conversation, the difference is that great". Well stated Mr. Kramer.
In cars by 2016 - great!
There will be a few pissed audiophiles because they don't want "regular people" in their hobby. I guess they will have to find another hobby dominated by dorks - model railroading perhaps.
The sooner we can get rid of mp3 and 16/44.1 in favor of higher rez formats, the better.

Not that I care about people using mp3 there's plenty of alternatives available for me.
The problem IMO with 2 channel folks as they've been trained to believe that better sound is going to cost more money. Huh, there's a revolution in sound quality happening at lower price points. Other than moving to higher rez formats the "high end" offers little real for the general public to get excited about except the pride of ownership of beautiful and/or expensive audio systems. Nothing wrong with that.
I could be wrong but is it possible that a device like the pono, or some other quality portable DAP when connected to a DAC and fed to high quality powered speakers could compete sonically with 10s of thousands of dollars in front end gear?
Given quality recordings there really isn't any reason why not.
Give me rhythm or give me death!

long live dorks!
Agreed.
99% on this forum are at least somewhat of a "dork", the other 1% are deluded.
Dorks - making others look cool since the dawn of time.

Need to get out more, if you are using mp3 and 16/44.1 in the same sentence.
Not that much wrong with 16/44.1 as a format. Mostly just shortcomings in recording and playback technology.
One format (mp3) sucks ass, the other (16/44.1) sucks slightly less......
To paraphrase Paul McGowan of PS Audio fame; Great digital struggles to achieve what is easily attainable by even modest analog.
PS Audio puts beans on the table with their digital offerings.

Hi, geezerrocket,
In my experience, the relative sound quality of MP3 compared to redbook CD (16/44.1) is far more of a difference than "sucks slightly less". I am able to enjoy music played from CDs, nearly as much as from LPs, but I cannot listen to music played from MP3 quality files. The sound hurts my brain and I can usually immediately tell that I'm listening to lossy digital files. (The exception is if the playback device is basically a cheap piece-o-crap and anything played on it would hurt your ears.)
You might be able to make your case if CDs were universally badly recorded and mastered, but the sound quality from many modern CDs is quite good, especially if played on a relatively decent system. Perhaps you're just very sensitive to 16/44.1 resolution. If so, that's unfortunate, because you're missing out on a lot of great music.
Regards,
Tom
stacks up against Audio Note or DCS 16/44.1.
The price difference is huge.
Too big for me!
Those rooms NOT exclusively playing vinyl, and many were, were either playing directly from a computer of some sort and/or spinning silver disks.
I'd say over half of the rooms would willingly play just about any CD you brought into the room and most of those were 16/44.1 Redbook CDs.
In fact, many rooms playing music from files of one sort or another would announce that what you were hearing was ripped CD's not Hi Rez.
