Same here, except I'm in Canada and go to amazon.ca to buy my CDs from the UK and Germany via a third party. I don't go to amazon.com because they charge us a minimum US$15 to ship here from their third parties, whereas amazon.ca only charges ~$3.50 and .uk ~$5.50.
I have never found any of the CDs to be fakes or counterfeits etc. They all exactly match up with the specs on discogs. None of these are rare, but many are rather expensive over here.
Shipping media from the UK to here is actually quite cheap, and I notice some of the "European" vendors actually ship from the UK. I assume they take some of the shipping fee surplus as part of their margin. Plus low overhead. Maybe they make a few points somehow by us not paying VAT. I guess it all adds up and with volume it's viable.
ImportCDs in the U.S. (via amazon.ca for me) is also a great place, but generally speaking they charge a little more and I can get the Euro versions cheaper, plus the Euro versions tend to have more tracks if they're British artists, say.
Follow Ups:
...if you go to a CD store that buys used CDs you'll be lucky to get $0.50 apiece for them.
Garage/estate sales pretty much give them away.
That's how they do it.
He had at least 500 discs. I think I mave have picked up 20 or so. A reseller could have offered him a hundred bucks for the lot and would have easily been able to sell the common ones at a few bucks each & OOPs for more and turn a nice profit.
