a legend who released several solo albums as well..
Follow Ups:
The Crusaders were perhaps my favorite music of all time - have a pandora station dedicated to them. Joe could play the keyboard and infuse emotion, lightheartedness, or drama to what he was playing. He would drive some songs like a percussionist or play a contra-melody against Felder's sax or Henderson's Trombone. Randy Crawford live CD with Joe cued up in my truck right now.
I'll play it with a touch of sadness on the the way home tonight... RIP Joe.
"The hardest thing of all is to find a black cat in a dark room, especially if there is no cat" - Confucius
Was fortunate to hear the Jazz Crusaders in summer 2002 as part of McClatchy Park Music Series, with Angela Bofill on vocals. Bet he's jammin' up in harmonic heaven with George Duke. R.I.P. Joe Sample
Oh man, that's depressing... great talent and the Crusaders were a great group...
In front of my gear, is a copy of Rainbow Seeker I (finally) found on vinyl - a few years back I bought the CD copy thinking it was gone for good.
What a terrific music maker!
I made a major mistake selling one of my Crusaders albums in college because I needed the money for books I couldn't afford at the time (sigh).
RIP Joe

"... only a very few individuals understand as yet that personal salvation is a contradiction in terms."
they were SMOKIN'! Stix Hooper did the most amazing drum solo I've ever heard and there never would have been
the Jazz Crusaders or Crusaders without Sample. He was a favorite for decades.
RIP.

A great one! R.I.P.
Man, I just downloaded their live album ...
reappear and disappear again?

I studied Nancy Jo when it was published in DownBeat.
A Thad Jones Bossa too.
There was an interview with Billy Beyers where he explained one of his techniques
for getting that Jessic'a Day Sound.
I wish there was a way to get those issues and copy them.
Quincy wrote it, but I heard Billy did the Ghost Writing for him.
Have you heard that?
Also, Kenton's Intermission Riff was stolen from Gerald,
really amazing that that could and did happen!
He will be missed. I have most of their albums!
One of my all time favorite recordings is the LP "We Three" he did with Shelly Manne and Ray Brown. I have a direct-to-disc version and a regular mastering. In either case both music and recording quality are exemplary.
Sad, sad day.
I have quite a few of his solo albums, including "Spellbound", my fav. and "Ashes to Ashes". Joe was "better than the best"!!!!
R.I.P dear Joe...
Vbr,
Sam
