...closing of B & M stores is the biggest issue for the industry.
How can people audition equipment or be introduced to high end audio?
Regional audio shows are about it.

I haven't lived anywhere close to a city with a stereo shop for many years so have been obligated to purchase most items online. The times that I did visit a stereo shop to listen to components while traveling, I wasn't able to purchase the product being demo'd because they didn't have the specific product I wanted in their inventory at the time (and they didn't want to sell the demo unit) or, if they did have the item (but I couldn't carry the product with me on the plane), they didn't ship products to another retail area (even though I lived 250 miles from the nearest retailer.) Sorry for the run-on sentence.
But what I did was to order the same product by phone when I got home either through the same B & M store (if they shipped) or, through another store that carried the product and did ship. So even though I didn't walk out the door with my speakers or integrated amp or CD player, I did support a stereo shop. Unfortunately, my contributions aren't going to make any difference in the long run.
Thankfully there are audiophile reviewers and forums such as this one that provide us with a hint of what to expect when we decide to purchase a stereo component. It's certainly not the same as hearing the product with your own ears, but it's what we have and I'm thankful for that.

Tom
I'm guilty here as far as B & M record stores are concerned. I grew up with Tower Records and the like but, for a long time now, I have purchased all of my music through Amazon. I have not gone down the road of digital downloads, and I won't, but that is the direction of the younger generation. I don't think any of my current students buy CDs anymore, though some have told me they do purchase vinyl.

Amazon and Discogs for me. If I could find a record store that stocked even half of the music I enjoy, I'd go there first. I miss thumbing through the racks of LP's and CD's, but I'm just not into pop music, hip-hop, or the 202,569th recording of Beethoven's Fifth. I understand that B&M's have limited space and have to stock what sells, but I shop the two places that stock what I want to buy.
...I buy new CDs that I can't wait for from Amazon.
Otherwise I buy them used from the local CD store.
I sometimes buy more obscure ones I can't find locally, used on Amazon.
