Technological "enhancements" that I perceive as making the sound worse. (Far too common.)

I think this is related to your Auto-tune comment as well. When a performer is more of a dancer than a singer, then the audio is left to auto-tune. Not sure when the dancing etc. became more important than the actual singing.
It has always been thus. Elvis wasn't much of a singer when he became a sensation. I suspect neither were those sultry voiced cabaret chanteuses in stockings and garters. One could probably keep going back in history for similar examples.
If dancing has in fact become more important than singing, I'd say that pElvis is to blame.
