Obviously you don't have a clue about the headphone market (I make my living in it). This particular individual currently owns over half a dozen headphones and IEMs (totaling about $10,000 worth) and I know quite a few people who own twice that and more. And even among those who may only own one or two headphones, there's a lot of churn with people buying a set of headphones and then selling them in a few months to buy a different set of headphones.
People buying a lot of headphones is not at all unusual in this market.
Just as an example, someone I know:

"Obviously you don't have a clue about the headphone market"Obviously. LOL There's apparently some tiny percentage of the population which buys a lot of headphones. Maybe it's something like collecting beer mugs or elephant figurines or miniatures of this or that.
Obviously, I can't speak to a particular individual's obsessive-compulsive or collecting behavior. But I think you will agree that to have 10 or 12 sets of headphones is not "normal", unless one owns a studio and needs to have enough for everyone at the session. I have two, count 'em, two. One open back, one closed back. That's all I need.
Too bad about your friend having Ultrasones. They suck. Especially for the money they want.
Back to the point... So a guy walks into a stereo shop and wants to try a bunch of headphones. He tells the store guy that he "buys a lot of headphones". The store guy should have said "well, apparently not from here, since I've never seen you in here before".
Doc Greiner (Dr. Richard Greiner, AES Fellow) used to come into a store where I worked. We'd shoot the shit, listen to stuff, etc., and he'd buy things from us. That doesn't seem to be the case with the guy who "buys a lot of headphones". The store guy was clearly justified in throwing the troll out.

No, you're not going to find them on every street corner, but neither are they all that uncommon.

Where does he say he told the salesman he buys a lot of headphones?

In what way was he a troll?
He was never given a chance to buy anything because they threw him out of the store before he could listen to anything. I'm sure if he would have really liked some of the headphones he had also come to audition for himself, he would have bought them. But instead, Stereo Exchange guaranteed he would never buy anything from them and probably at least a few others in the New York area who have heard how he was treated.
Well, excuuuuuuuuse me.He told US:
"I was there for two reasons:
1. I buy a lot of headphones, and I was interested to hear some of the newer, more rare models"
In retail audio, a troll is someone who comes in, wants to listen to a bunch of stuff, and then leaves, never to be seen again, until maybe the next time they come and want to listen to a bunch of stuff and still doesn't buy anything.
We used to say that they fell into the "be-back hole". That's where people go when they say "I'll be back" and we never see them again.
Oops, forgot to include this:
"I, stupidly and naively, told him both reasons. (Although I also intended to write my impressions in a notebook, which probably would have tipped them off even if I hadn't said anything.)"
This guy has "troll" and "jackass" written all over him.
Btw, interesting new monikor. What was your old one again? Steve something or other?
