In Reply to: RE: The on-line shopping versus the brick - and - mortar shopping: USED.... posted by jea48 on August 21, 2014 at 09:01:15
so no used equipment was around? no newspaper classifieds, no hobbyist newsletters with back page ads, no hobby mags with back page ads, no estate sales with the occasional jewel of a component, no . . . .?
in addition there was the surprise that could come your way - an older sibling hands down his or her hi-fi system, a buddy or neighbor tires of their system or it breaks down and you're handy with DIY, etc.
an added bonus: in the above places - talking USED stuff only as in my original post - there was more trustworthiness [except local newspapers] from the seller than in today's wild wild west of craig's list or amazon.
an added added bonus: you could meet the person or knew the person or knew of the person as they're in your area/family/block.
thanks for interest

Sure there was but no where near the inventory/selection that is found on the likes of AudioGon.
Yes you could run an ad in your local paper and if the Newspaper was State wide you pay a substantially higher fee and run it State wide.
And of course Stereophile had a classified section in the back of the magazine. Not a big deal.
The only thing that even came close to AudioGon was a members only ad publication called Audio Mart, if my memory serves me right on the name. Great way to sell/buy used audio equipment. AudioGon eventually ran the ad publication out of business.
Bottom line I wouldn't be surprised if used sales of audio equipment far out numbers the sales of new audio equipment. And like it or not that has not only hurt the manufactures of high-end equipment but also has hurt B&M audio stores.
