A surprising number think they are doing the public a favor.
If you open a bricks & mortar nowadays you'd better realized you in competition with the Internet. What distinguishes you from the Internet is good service and an accommodating attitude. Perhaps the guy who auditioned product 'A' at your place today but buys on Amazon; but he might be back to buy product 'B' tomorrow -- that is, if you don't treat him like a POS today.
I love the music of ... ... Gustav Mahler

The small store is a specialist and a good businessman can distinguish between a customer and a pain in the ass like Barabajagal. He wants to "showroom" and can't understand why the guy won't let him. It is nonsense. He plainly stated what he wanted and was surprised that they would not let him do it.
I am a very loyal customer of good local businesses, and always buy where I try, even if it's at a 'local' BestBuy, so long as I am treated well there. But just because a business is local, does not mean it is inherently somehow better than either an online business or a big box store. I have been mistreated, given bad advice and sold crappy products, and been lied to by local businesses. It's certainly the exception to the rule, but not that narrow an exception for those of us who try to buy locally.
Whether these owners had the right to do what the did is not the point. Of course they did. But it was incredibly stupid and shortsighted. If they are that angry about this phenomenon, then they shouldn't be selling fungible low cost items to a young demographic for crying out loud.
It's like an online reviewer getting mad because the makers of the products he reviews aren't buying enough advertising on his site. If you don't like the challenges involved in a particular job, maybe you are not doing it well enough or should just move onto something else.

Ya think? ;-)
It's almost as if they expect those who walk through their door to be unaware that there's this thing called the Internet.
Like I said, dinosaurs.
