He offered to be as accommodating as he could including giving them free publicity. The guy's wife just kicked him in the teeth. They're just a bunch of paranoid dinosaurs trying to look "hip" by exploiting the growing and much more youthful headphone market. They do nothing but hurt themselves by treating this guy the way they did.

Unless he got permission from the owner ahead of time, he had no business doing that in the his store.
First, Marco buys a ton of crap, and he can afford to having founded and sold a number on internet companies. And he's a headphone nut, and any other toy that catches his fancy.
Second, you have no idea whether he would have bought or not, but as I know him and his background and reputation I'm taking his word that he would.

He was also demoing for himself. They just went totally apeshit when he mentioned he might write about some things on his blog.

Look at his headphone lineup in his profile. HiFiMAN HE-6s ($1,300), Stax SR-009 ($4,000), Fostex TH-900 ($1,400), Sennheiser HD-800 ($1,500), Beyerdynamic T90 ($650), etc.
He not just some snot-nosed kid with a pair of Beats by Dre.
And how would Stereo Exchange have known about this? To them, he probably seemed like one more wordy, talkative enthusiast. Should they naively believe everything anyone tells them?

I'm in a service industry. It's hard work to run a business. Some succeed and others fail. These owners look like they're just not cut out for it.

For me, the evils of a certain individual posting here is the topic.
New York City is no library, other cities are like libraries compared to it. Stereo Exchange is running a business there (if you can make it there you can make it anywhere, as they say), and if they are convinced that they don't need guys like this one in their store, I would tend to believe them.
I say leave them alone and let them try to do their thing. Maybe they'll fail completely or maybe they'll morph into an online presence, but it seems that they don't need or want the help of internet gossip columnists at this present time. More power to them.
Once his friends found out about the store, they would most likely view the store as a place to demo the products they were interested in buying... on Amazon!

Maybe he's a wonderful guy most of the time, but I still don't know what really went on at Stereo Exchange that fateful day. Nobody does, except for the few people who were directly involved.To answer your question, I can say that I've read and heard of the exact same complaint many, many times over. That's more than Barabajagal or anyone else can say of the so-called "facts" pertaining to events reported here.

What exactly in the above do YOU disagree with?
Having read Marco's post I see no reason to dislike Marco. He seems like a nice guy, etc... I'd bet that we are all pretty nice guys (for the most part), but that is beside the point. My point is that I cannot fully trust (or distrust) Marco, or anyone else involved in this thing, until I feel satisfied that certain facts have been proven. Barabajagal is the only one who has earned my distrust so far, and the reason for that is because he posits opinions as if they were known facts. I won't automatically believe gossip that appears on the internet. I must first know that all parties involved have had their say and/or the same version of events has been corroborated by several people. The situation and the description of people involved in it, as Barabajagal has portrayed them, may or may not be true to form but I cannot rightly consider matters to be proven at this point in time.For some reason Barabajagal deems himself fit to act as representative for all parties involved. He presumes to render judgments that are simply inappropriate at this point in time. He goes beyond what he actually knows to be true. He resorts to speculation. He seems pretty satisfied that he is infallible, but I am less than impressed with his performance so far. Please don't think that I'm trying to demonize Barabajagal, however. He seems human. How many of us choose to employ our imaginations on occasion, so that important stories might seem more conclusive and tidier than they have any right to be?
That's it, in a nutshell.

He just linked to an interesting thread on Head-Fi. I have no idea WTF this 'Barabajagal' guy is, noting that most here have little respect for him but...
The Head-Fi thread stands on it's own irrespective of who posted a link to it here. And further, Marco is posting in his own name and many know him from his days at Tumblr. and/or his creation of Instapaper.
We've exchanged views on headphones in the past few months and while I have no met him in person, I have close friends in the 'tech' community who have and know that he is held in high regard.
Further, his post on Head-Fi certainly is not a whine, in fact it seem more a 'mea culpa' than a post complaining about the way he was treated.
Me? I'm writing the whole thing off to his choosing to live in NY. Noted that one of the follow-up posts on the Head Fi thread commenting on what would have happened had he encountered Joe Grado under similar circumstances, back in the day. ;-)
I've already explained what I find objectionable about the OP's message and his outlook. Go back and read the things that have been posted so far, if you are still interested.

Using that logic, Stereo Exchange shouldn't let anyone into their store to listen to anything.
At the very least, they should kick out any person who talks about doing stuff that they don't want done.
They didn't even listen to him when he said he wouldn't list any other sources for the headphones and would exclusively mention Stereo Exchange. As I said, they're just a bunch of paranoid dinosaurs. And according to Yelp, they seem to be their own worst enemy, not the kid wanting to demo some headphones.
And WHY are they so paranoid?Because, they've been burned too many times by talkative internet shoppers who like to waste their time, help themselves to free demos, ask for free advice, etc..?

So what are they going to do, grill everyone who comes through the door before they can listen to anything? Yeah, that will keep the customers coming back.
And as the poster pointed out, high end headphones aren't really discounted by online retailers so there's no real incentive for anyone walking in their door to buy elsewhere. I don't believe Stereo Exchange really has much of a clue about the high end headphone market. They're just jumping on the bandwagon.
Do you really think that "high-end" headphones are the only ones these sneaky internet buyers are going to want to demo? These parasites will want to demo any and all headphones that catch their eyes, in every price range, the more the merrier. Just so that they can go back to headfi and brag about all of the different brands and models they've heard, after having successfully persuaded the sucker salesman over at the hifi shop?Online retailers and/or brick-n-mortar shops aren't the only places to buy high-end headphones, you know. Bargain hunters will try to take advantage of any "free informational demo" they can, in order to pick and choose more wisely somewhere else or in the used gear marketplace.
And BTW, not everyone wants to have their products reviewed, not even for free. Suppose the "reviewer" goes out and posts spurious or negative comments that create unfair prejudice in the market place? Retailers might prefer that people came in and made up their own minds, instead of trusting the words of some blogger who might have an agenda of some sort.
They have every right to "... grill anyone who comes through the door before they can listen to anything.". As a matter of fact, they'd be stupid not to. Let them worry about who to admit and who to kick out. It's their business, not yours.

Because "the public" is persuaded to trust the words of guys like you, who post one-sided gossip on the internet, brick-n-mortar shops are having a harder time than they might otherwise have. Have the decency to post only about YOUR OWN personal experiences and/or about facts that are pretty much beyond dispute. Don't post second-hand gossip. If you have not actually been there yourself then why say much of anything - either negative or positive? Better safe than sorry!
