I've often thought about whether having a 'musical' sounding system can be considered a negative since it seems, by definition, to impart some type of euphonic haze (coloration?) to the overall sound. I've owned my Spendor S100's for close to 25 years(!), a speaker long praised for its inherent musicality. My system's evolved from solid state to tube during this time but has always sounded great (to me). I've always felt this was due in no small part to the Spendors. I've also never truly suffered with 'strident digititis' when listening to CD's and now MP3's. Again, I think I have the Spendors to thank for this. I remember auditioning in my system, on loan, a pair of Thiel CS7's. Very highly praised in the audio press at the time, for me, these were the polar opposites of the Spendors. Man, I couldn't return those puppies quick enough! IMO musicality can never be considered a negative but obviously that's just my opinion. I'd be interested to hear of other components that are considered to have 'musicality'.

I wonder how this mistaken description got started? I think it is a continuation of the tube vs solid state, and digital vs analog. I have heard tube components and analog systems that have as much detail as any ss or digital system. I consider my all tube system to be highly musical yet it has tons of detail and frequency extension. The negative assumptions of musicality are just simply wrong. I have heard rolled off and highly colored components that were not musical at allAlan
I'm in like my 15th year with my SP-100s.
What's really funny about this is if I put on my "audiophile" hat there's lots to criticize about them (bass accuracy/rolled off HFs). But when it comes right down to playing records and even analyzing recording differences they are the the real deal.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
