I'm looking for a comfy chair that also allows support for feet when needed. I'm not interested in those very big home theater chairs. Any ideas.
Follow Ups:
I cannot sit comfortably for any length of time (at all, really) unless my feet are on the floor. Yet I'm still reading this thread! It is so hard to find a chair exactly like what I have, but nicer...that I thought maybe you guys would mention something where the foot part is optional, or else it would stay retracted if you reclined very slightly. i.e. not a La-Z-Boy type or the typical HT type.I have the worst slouchy posture I can imagine (short of a physical medical issue), and yet I don't have a bad back at all (I'm a bit short of 60). So you'd think I'd like a zero-gee or other lazy chair, but no.
I did find a nice-looking chair of decent quality that reclines (if you want) and the footrest part is *optionally* extended. It is also not really wide, and the back part where your head is is not too tall. I did not buy it because after I got home I decided to research exactly what kind of "leather" it's made of ("leather" is a wildly varying term these days, kinda like "lo-cal" or "organic"). That's when I found out it's a *woman's* chair...that wasn't in the advertising or the brochures! That would perhaps explain why it's not larger and not quite so tall in the back (good for audio)...I'm still thinking about it.
Ah, found it again, didn't save the links from last year when I was looking. Try to read the features in the teensy-tiny docs they have. Those are Canadian prices BTW, and it was a fair bit cheaper than that here in the boonies (not Toronto prices), depending on cover materials. In person the chair is much smaller than the pics might make you think, it is not at all La-Z-Boy or HT chair sized.
Edits:The place I saw the chair offered dozens of colors, not just 3, and also note some features are optional...maybe I only remember the base price... Now that I look at the pics better, the one I saw was made of larger pieces of leather (i.e. no seams in sides or back etc.) and tighter leather (no "ripples"). And wasn't called "Queen" either, else I would have figgered... So I guess it's the same style/guts, Scandinavian-made too (i.e. you have to wait a bit for it to come in), but a different manufacturer or perhaps an "up" model.
Not exactly what I wanted, which once again is exactly what I already have that looks nothing like this one, but made of nicer wood and nicer leather. Wanted to get something decent while I still can afford it: the general quality of typical furniture is plummeting, and the price of anything decently made is skyrocketing. Have you noticed?

Start with a simple test
While listening to music from whatever chair you use, cup your ears with your hands
Now move your hands so that they push your ears toward the music, then back
Now experiment with different hand positions
It's quite an eye/ear opener
IMO, thick, high back chairs dramatically interfere with the sound
Google zero gravity chair. Under $100.
hi, I mostly hang out over in the Vinyl asylum, but I am always interested in storage and furnishings. I find that having a chair that goes up by my head affects the imaging and sound. Does anyone else have this issue? I have thought of getting something that has a minimal head rest like a dentist chair but that would be pretty weird looking in my living room where my stereo is.
I've always thought someone should market that "Dentist Chair" minimal headrest to the audiophile community, but can't say I've ever seen it. And I'm not smart enough to have done it, obviously.
See ya. Dave
Not many were made during that period, but they do show up once in awhile.
Comfort is good, but may not fit in everyones decor.
This is mine with a foot stool...I have been using a small loveseat for most of my listening. I like my ears above the chair back...I am going to try the chair again soon, to see what the differences are between the two again...
thanks
Mark
designed by Jeffrey Bernett and Nicholas Dodziuk. Friends have this and it's very comfortable. The smallest recliner I know of. However, expensive. On sale now at Design Within Reach.
Best Furnishings makes a whole line of apartment size recliners-rockers. Very, very comfortable and only about 32-33 inches wide. Costs about $500.
I have two and love them.

Everyone is built a bit differently....you have to sit in a chair to know if it is the right one.
no, we are not built differently when our feet are supported and we are sitting up in a listening position. in that case, our weight is concentrated on our tailbones unless the chair is designed to distribute the weight more evenly......or.....we lay back into a less optimal listening position and recline the chair to distribute the weight.and with your weight on your tailbone there is limited time before something starts to hurt.....and that time frame can vary from person to person.
I do agree that if your feet are on the floor then there are many more variables on what is comfortable.

I don't care what chair you buy or not.....I simply am giving you advice that I took/take when looking for seating. Some people are fat, some skinny, some tall, some short, with a myriad of shapes that accompany a myriad of sizes. I had to "audition" many chairs until I found the one I bought Many look very comfortable, but after 10 minutes they annoy. Big leather chairs are not conducive to good sound, because they reflect resonances ....you pay your money, you get what you get.
good (visually & price wise) are available in your area for a first hand/sitting audition.
The only way to pick a chair (for comfort) is to sit in it.
there is no chair as comfortable as the zero-gravity chair from Relax The Back Store for extended listening. I've had mine for 15 years and i can listen for 12 hours continuously without back strain. it eliminates strain on the tailbone by distributing your weight along the whole length of your back and legs. however it is fairly large.....although my particular version is quite narrow.that said; i also use the Cassina K10 Dodo when i have visitors since it has retractable head and footrests and has a small footprint and is very comfortable. unfortunately it is also very expensive. my K10 Dodo is black leather.

I found the nicest looking chair I have ever seen, but can't afford it. The chair is the Rolf Benz 3100. This chair looks amazing and guess what it retails for 13,000.00.
their chairs are not cheap but they are the best build quality I ever came across and they are very comfortable. They have many lines of chairs, we sold the recliners and the couches, including the reclining couches that I bought 4 of. You need to find a dealer and try as many models as he has, each item has a differing feel. All offer tremendous back support. Some dealers sell off the floor or if you wish you may choose from various grades and colors of perfect leather. The custom ones take about 6- weeks but are worth it in order to have just the right chair and look that you (or she) wishes.
They look similar to the Stressless brand but the construction and materials are far better. I could have sold the Stressless line but decided that, for my customers, build and comfort trumped price.
of time impressibly.
By the American designers famous for so many classics, the Eames.
I have one.
Some additional ideas linked below.....
I should have been more specific. I want to be able to recline and have feet extend out, kind of like a lazy boy. I am looking for small though not those huge chairs. Relax your back makes a nice one, but I want smaller width yet.
I have one similar to this one, which I am very happy with. Can sit for hours, and nap if the mood hits.
Try this one
Give me rhythm or give me death!
I've owned 4 Ekones Stressless chairs, and own one now. I also currently have a great Ekones sofa. the Stressless chair I own now I use in my rec room upstairs for watching sports. and for laying back and putting your feet up and watching TV it's great.unfortunately for listening, the Stressless 'cups' the sound around the head so does mess with the sound in bad ways. also, when sitting at listening height it is about a '2-hour' chair.....meaning my back can handle about 90 minutes to 2 hours sitting up before it starts to get stiff and sore. at that point I need to constantly move my position around to stay comfortable. which is fine for TV but not for serious listening. the issue is that the Stressless chair does put most of your weight on your tailbone when your feet are on the ottoman. that is where the 'zero-gravity' chair has the huge advantage.....which is why I use that in my listening room.
YMMV

I can't seem to find any pricing. What do some of their chairs cost?
See ya. Dave
I think they start at around a $1000 and go up from there. They are very well built and mega deals can be had on the used market. We've got 3 of them and a small sofa.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
and it is not even released yet!! I wonder what the price is?
I would also like to fit one of these to a massage pad. They need a chair with a firmly contoured seat, just like this.
In the mean time, my bean bad is doing just fine, though ;-)
This one was in my home office / listening room along with my Herman Miller office chair. It is very comfortable and the ottoman is easily moved if you don't need the feet support. I like the fact that it has slightly wide armrests which comes in handy if I'm using a wireless mouse and keyboard to control the computer from across the room. Unfortunately, my office / listening room is a bit tight so my wife has this chair now in the master bedroom.
The Comfy Chair with Ottoman
Here's the chair I'm using now which is my combo office chair and listening chair. The feet support slides in and out from under the chair. You slide it out then fold the cushion out for your feet. When not in use it all tucks back under the chair. The seat back can be extended to a full lay down position which is great for dental work but too extreme for music listening. It's a good compromise chair for office / music listening. Not nearly as good as solidly built Herman Miller office chair, and not as comfy as the chair above that's is now in the master bedroom. The Herman Miller chair is stored in the basement for now.
The VIVA OFFICE chair made in China from Amazon $340, some assembly required
Cool chair. What model Tannoys are those? Do you like them? Are they keepers?
I've had the Tannoy Definition D500 speakers for maybe 12 years now. The Tannoys don't require a lot of power to sound nice but really come alive dynamically if you give them a bit more power than you might think necessary.
I also have a pair of Thiel CS2.4 (boxed up in the basement for now) that sound more transparent and detailed but they're too large for my office listening room. And they require more powerful amplification than the Tannoys. I'm glad I kept the Tannoys all these years. ;-)
Tannoy also made a larger D700 and D900.
The Tannoy Definition D500 with baffle removed showing 8" dual-concentric driver/tweeter
Here you go. Get the accessory footstool shown below the chair description. I can sit for quite a while in complete comfort.
Not sure how long you have owned it but, after awhile the strut under your knee and also the other under the rear of ottoman start to penetrate through the pillows then it hurts...............
We've had ours for about 4 years and until a month ago were the only TV/Music chairs we had in our home. So far, no collapsed foam. If this does become a problem, new foam including covers can be had for about $69 each. Very inexpensive as far as anything furniture related.
Completely agree I should have tried restuffing the pillows.
I guess you are skinnier than I :}
