Are you saying the party has ended? Don't we still have several great brands of beautiful speakers to choose from? While transistors are among us, don't we still have several great tube brands to choose from, at various price points?
I think the party has just gotten larger with much more choice than ever before.
A so-called "golden age" is different for every generation and it's just a myth that lingers in the aged nostalgic mindset.

My point was that it was a populist hobby at one time, as others have pointed out, this was due to less choice, or noise, competing for peoples attention.It is now an elitist hobby for rich, bald, old white men, like bjh above (yes, I'm guilty) and that's where it ends.
