Digital, PC Audio, High Rez, the music forums?
I'm thinking free digital downloads (not reissues) is one of the greatest things to happen for audiophiles since the beginning.
Seems kind of backwards our approach to this topic. In the internet Archives free and legal lossless and high resolution live recordings are available for all.
I think it's pretty obvious when listening to these kinds of raw recordings that this is some of the best sounding music available. And it's free.

I haven't spent much time on archive, but I can see it's pretty amazing. I agree that free stuff is always nice to get.
Bootlegs are different. I get it - some are very desirable. But I have too many musician and performer friends, so I see bootlegs as theft. Granted, the music business isn't known for fairness, and artists don't always get paid for sales of their recordings, but bootlegs *guarantee* they get nothing.

I attend a couple dozen concerts per year. I estimate only 1/4 of them prohibit recording and photos. I'm pretty sure the policy at the Internet Archives is that the band has to sign on for their stuff to be there.Boots are a bit different and I'm sure their legal status varies depending on origin.

Yea I guess if one thinks owning the boot is gonna run off sales and keep people from the shows it's understandable why a band/artist might hate boots. I never saw them that way - thinking instead they are for more hardcore fans who are likely to come to shows and already have several official releases.
For what it's worth I've bought music and attended concerts of bands I would never have known about without the downloads.

For over a decade. And there are many truly great sounding live recordings available there for free download. I'm a jam band fan and the offerings from groups like Umphrey's McGee, The Mermen, Moe, New Monsoon, Tea Leaf Green, etc. are truly a gift from Heaven.
You don't have to spend *any* money on source material if you have similar interests...

Though I'm not surprised there's so little discussion about this kind of stuff here on AA. It's kind of cool being free and all makes it kind of exclusive in these quarters....

in the past with no luck.
We had MOG (still up but soon to close) and now have BEATS and Spotify plus Pandora and others.
Folks outside the US, and those of us who spend a lot of time in Europe, might also have QOBUZ for streaming.
As far as downloads, if they are Hi Rez then there is a forum for that, plus MUSIC and Computer, once it's downloaded, of course. ;-)
Makes no sense having the same conversations in different forums. This site doesn't have enough traffic that it needs to be split up much as it is.
Might be a good idea. It's funny I can easily find topics discussing high rez, CD and vinyl in technical terms and all kinds of hapless comparisons. Of course with that a plethora of conclusions based on anecdotal evidence.
Recently been using a playlist consisting of lossless live downloads - most of them sourced from the Internet Archives. In my car and on my boombox these are some of the best sounding recordings I own - no reason to think they won't be the same on my big systems.
In a way it kind of puzzles me there has been so little comment on the quality of this stuff. No it's not the same old audiophile approved kind of stuff and the selection is limited. But still Robert Randolph, Drive By Truckers, North Mississippi Allstars, Derek Trucks Band, My Morning Jacket and many others participate in these kinds of totally free and legal high quality downloads.
If one looks one can find live bootlegs and demo/outtakes recordings for almost every band available for free download on the internet. Some of it sounds absolutely fantastic. I don't think it has so much to do with the format or media (lossless should be good enough). I think being raw and production free is the key.
