I've "donated" many old issues of Stereophile to various waiting rooms over the years. One thing I've noticed is that these issues never remain in the waiting rooms for very long. Someone always takes them home (in awe of the prices and the hyperbole, no doubt) to cherish them, in a state of amazement.

...of old magazines in medical waiting rooms.
Actually, most of the magazines I drop off are only not very old. 1 - 2 years old, at most...
Those glamorous cover photos of glowing of tube gear surely have an effect. Mostly though, our magazines appear (to others) as a fascinating view into a refreshingly unknown little corner of the universe - the world of electro-mechanical fetishism.
Do you have stats to back up that claim? Unless you were watching, from a covert position, you have no way of knowing. The mags might just as easily been thrown into nearby trash cans, in an effort to save patients from yet another affliction.
