I have a Monster Power AVS-2000 Signature Voltage Stabilizer, just out of warranty, that has failed (or at least the alarm sounds when it is powered up). Given the considerable investment sunk into this product, not that long ago, I wondered if anyone knows if these units can be successfully repaired? I know Monster refuses to service them once they are out of warranty but wondered if anyone had experience having one of these units (or something similar from their line) repaired by an unauthorized repair service?
Any suggestions for reliable repair services in the NYC area that might tackle such a job?

the buzzer sounds when the thermistor goes out. Its the small two wire lead black disc which looks like a ceramic capacitor.

the AVS2000 has a huge donut shaped device with a big clamp which rotates on top of it.
I would open it up and move the clamp around. (it is stiff, but with a good twist it rotates back and forth.)
Maybe it is just stuck?
It is a huge and heay device. but pretty simple inside. I would think someone with a bit of talent could get it working.
I haven't opened it up - maybe I will, I guess I have nothing to lose, right? I was wondering if it was actually *that* difficult to repair - as a stabilizer I assume it's a relatively uncomplicated design - that's why I posted here.
That "slider" looks like an old-fashioned variac.
A look inside.
The worse case is that you waste $50 on filing fees and whatnot and the best is that you get a judgement against Monster for $1,600. You'll cost them money though to show up and defend the law suit which may make you feel better.
How long has it been discontinued?
At the very least Monster should offer you a similar current item at a substantial discount, like the cost of repair as a customer service. You could try calling them, but that's a long shot.
Based on the reviews, I wouldn't bother trying to fix it. It appears that everyone liked the product in 2008 until they all broke in 2012.
You could also buy a used one if you're feeling lucky.

An old friend of mine worked for Mercedes Benz as a crisis manager I guess you would call it. When a car was just about to go lemon law or involve a lawsuit Ralph would go in and try to resolve it. I was asking him about some of his more interesting or stressful cases one time and he said a while back some guy wanted MB to buy back his 12 year old Mercedes because of a transmission issue. The guy filed in small claims, MB came with their lawyers, and the guy lost. On the way out of the courthouse the guy stopped Ralph and said "you ARE going to buy back that car". "How much did it cost you to have your attorney here today? It cost me $5o to file and I'm re-filing again tomorrow and will keep re-filing till you buy it back." MB kicked in some and the dealer kicked in some and they bought the car back.
My unit isn't actually discontinued - it's the Signature version which is still being sold - but it is out of it's warranty period. If I recall the conversation I had with Monster service previously, the agent claimed they don't repair - even within warranty - but replace with a new unit. The logic is that if the unit has died, then it's actually done what it was supposed to do ...
What a piece of shit. There you go.
Bingo!
After going to look at Monster pages I can see they are big on 'authorized dealer'
Many companies will NOT service equipment purchased from some unauthorized dealer.
Bryston is another. 20 year warranty? worthless unless you can provide a proof of purchase from an authorized dealer.
Bryston just started that policy abput five years ago.
They do still honor for old products. But newer ones you better have that proof.
I remember Bryston's transferable 20 year warranty as being one of the attractive points in owning one (ditto for resale).
I guess all good things do come to an end.
may the bridges I burn light the way-
So old Bryston gearis still covered. ONly the more recent gear must have proof of purchase.
Not that they have any issues.. But I think they want to cut off recent grey market sellers hard.
even if you have proof of purchase, will the warranty transfer to another owner?
I guess the best way to know is contacting Bryston.

Better not to comment on things you don't understand.....
Are you a Bryston spokeperson? You are constantly bringing up Bryston.
Don't recall seeing a post regarding you and such in quite some time.
Are you looking to rent one of my hoes?
decided go without a hobby/recreational garden this year. However, a friend of mine @ the DOJ might be interested in your offer.

Thanks for the constructive responses Elizabeth. I've contacted Monster again about out-of-warranty repair. To clarify, I had an email exchange with a Monster service technician a while ago & was told that the flat fee replacement option was the only alternative for out-of-warranty units (I forget the exact sum involved but it was in excess of $1000). It was a gift, so I am not even sure if it was purchased at an authorized dealer or not.
Given the original cost (& the fact that it was a gift), I am reluctant to simply throw the unit away (but, frankly, not willing to sink another $1000+ into it). For that reason I was wondering about the possibility/wisdom of third-party repair & hoped that someone here might have had relevant experience they would be willing to share.
You can certainly find another one used for less than $1,000.
I sold one a few years ago for?? $600 maybe ... around that.
Monster not being willing to service them sucks.
When a company will not take care of it's customers...
One more reason to avoid Monster.
PS WHo told you Monster will not repair it out of warranty? A repair station 'authorized' by Monster? Or the main company itself? If it was some service company working for Monster, I would write Monster directly.. Send the letter right to Noel Lee directly.

Not to be an a-----e but why would you buy a product from a manufacturer that doesn't service their own product. Obviously It's not worth fixing. What does that tell you?
"Not to be an a-----e ......."
Too late!
