The shop owner was very nice. I got to listen to an all MBL system.

I will ask him to show me his MBL if that's not considered impolite ;-)

Thanks! for sharing. What were some of the other brand(s)?
Linn, LG, Sennheiser and a lot of modern design HT stuff that I did not care about.
your oil dollars at work
"your oil dollars at work"
Are you saying the oil dollars should *not* support the audio industry?
With that attitude, quality sound reproduction will be dead sooner rather than later.
I think it is called the "petro dollar" but that was hilarious!
I snorted the beer I am drinking out of my nose!
Imagine if the dollar was backed by beer? We'd all have MBL systems here in the states ;P
...And?
Or is it a secret?

I think I'd need a Master's degree before I would be allowed to design that.

The recessed mounting makes it easier to trip over.
Those Dubains think of everything.
:)
The system sounded great, looked great and was demo-ed in an optimized room. My opinion - more eye candy than performance given the hundreds of thousands of dollar price tag. The sound was bested by systems that I have heard that were far less expensive. One of the best - cost no object - systems I remember was at Victors in Chicago (late 80s) double quads on stands, coffin sized subs driven by two Levinson amps per channel. I think the source was an LP 12 it was magic, but I was young and impressionable.
Lately I am more impressed by value based systems.
I remember Victors, thats been a LONG time ago.....
good stuff and plenty of attitude.
"...more eye candy than performance given the hundreds of thousands of dollar price tag."
What?! I thought that, given the tremendous strength of the U.S. dollar against other currencies, it would be readily affordable for even the lowest of middle class Americans.
:)
I am the lowest class.
...you heard in the 1980s that impressed you was a Levinson HQD system.
Stacked Quad 57s, Hartley 24" subs and Decca ribbon tweeters.
I heard them at a dealers in SF who had taped the sound of different tonearms playing a recording with the same cartridge so we could hear the tonearm differences.
They didn't sound impressive to me when I heard them back in the late 70s. It seems John Cooledge was contacted by a guy who lived south of Atlanta about his HQD system. We drove down one Saturday afternoon to take a listen.
I recall preferring JWC's Ampzilla driven Dayton-Wrights cum Earthquake subwoofer. :)
I know this is probably anathema, but I don't think it's very possible for one system to sound truly superb in rendering "small" music, i.e. jazz trios, a cappella groups, and symphonic. And rendering rock is another feat, altogether.
I would argue that the sheer power and amount of drivers (and their size) necessary for "large" music would almost need to void the laws of physics to be lithe, quiet, and appropriate (reproducing a single human voice using a surface many times its size is problematic, no?).
Room, no.

Perhaps that is the difference for me. While the amount of radiating area between double 57s and Dayton-Wright XG-8s is about the same, I found the D-Ws more coherent and natural sounding. Which has always driven my choice in speakers. I find the Sound Lab U-1s to be my ideal speaker in that they are utterly coherent, cast a realistic image size and have flat (measured in room) response to 30 hz.

Wonder how many people trip and fall into that per week, twisting some part of their leg?
Not that that sidewalk looks teeming with folk.
I'm with you - we've all seen pictures of an all MBL system, be nice to get an idea what it sounded like!

many construction mistakes are common in other countries. someone once sent around an email with many examples of poor planning carried out to completion.

I'm pretty sure that, normally, the hydrant gets covered with a large planter or trashcan when it's not being used.Maybe there was a fire drill on the day they took that photo?

it's just as well, those things will probably just squirt oil at ya'.When I was in Afghanistan we set up a camp out in the middle of no where. The US Navy engineers were called in to create a water source by digging for underground wells.
After 14 tries in 14 different areas, they kept hitting oil and eventually gave up.
may the bridges I burn light the way-

Maybe good planning. With all that heat of mbl systems and may be more systems inside, a fire hydrant comes in handy.

...the MBL 9011 amps is how coolly they operate, even when pushed hard for hours. At least, I could only find one small area on the outside which was even remotely warm on one which had been driving its 101E to extremely loud volumes all day. Dubai is the perfect place to sell that MBL gear - lots of folks there who can afford it.

That right there is good enough reason to buy their stuff, folks. Step right up.

play loud enough to start a fire. it seems the germans that demo them can't restrain themselves.

Poor planning.. The hydrant is so low to ground level that it may actually not be usable.

May be deliberately hidden so as to be able to give the mbl buying millionaires heavy parking tickets. Need to finance all those skyscrapers.

Fortunately there may be a fix if it's a standard American made hydrant. Riser kits are available to bring that hydrant up closer to grade. Or at least to a point where it's serviceable. With that said, it's MUCH easier to set the hydrant at the right grade in the first place. Should have been corrected before they poured the concrete.
Remove the grate, route the hose down & back to the plug. Or, more properly, route the hose through the windows of the ubiquitous BMW 8 series or Mercedes, down through the grate, and onto the plug. :)
And leave a foot of the hydrant and the surrounding "pit" there for a massive tripping/falling hazard? If that's the case, the hydrant should be set below grade in a concrete vault of some ilk and covered with a similar diamond plate.
