I think the first time I heard it put that way, it was from J10 when he was still with Stereophile, I'm sure he wasn't the first.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

The sweet spot is a term used by audiophiles and recording engineers to describe the focal point between two speakers, where an individual is fully capable of hearing the stereo audio mix the way it was intended to be heard by the mixer. In the case of surround sound, this is the focal point between four or more speakers.
Interesting that they define surround sound as being four or more speakers.

Treasure Island, 1883.
Long John Silver tells the narrator:
Ah . . . this here is a sweet spot, this island — a sweet spot for a lad to get ashore on. You’ll bathe, and you’ll climb trees, and you’ll hunt goats. . . . Why, it makes me young again.

Geoff

It's a borrowed term. Merriam Webster says it refers to the best spot on a racquet or club for hitting a ball. First use in that context was probably in the late 1940s.
My Tennis coach has used that word in the 1950s. On the wooden racquets of those days, the sweet spot was not exactly in the centre but moved up. While playing on the red clay courts we used to take pride in showing a red patch on the strings at the sweet spot.
Cheers
Bill
