The one exception are those Japanese on the huge drums. that is kind of interesting. At least to watch once.
Otherwise drums, drummers and drumming in general is about as interesting to me as watching clothes dry on a line.
(drum solos in Jazz Yikes... I tolerate them, but would never buy any Jazz music for it's drum solos.)
Now it is true without some drums much music would not be as good.
It is just the centralization or focus on drums I do not get AT ALL.
Like banging. gee what does it take to bang? yeah STEADY banging,, like WOW... not.
(Yeah I KNOW I invite endless hate from drummers and drum fans.. I am just telling it how i feel it.Now a good Saxophone.. or a piano, or violin, or clarinet, or oboe, or trumpet, French horn. bassoon, (added: guitar.. yeah lots of sorts of guitars..) viol, or just about ANY instrument.. (well tuba is pretty boring) better than drums.
There i said it.
Feel free to throttle me, all you drum freaks..

You need Frank's approach to drum solos.

That was hilarious! Thanks.
Those big Japanese drums are called "Taiko", fyi.

When they cut to the view from the 'audience', there are two drummers playing.
By the way, I love to watch the performance, but didn't like just listening to it.
Her timing and technique are right on - refinement comes when there is no longer any need or desire to impress anyone.

I couldn't see any other performers in that studio (other than a observer's shadow).
I did see two stuffed toy animals off in the background; so cute!

Agree GL. Just one drummer, no "'pic sync' deception". There is sometimes a sync issue on You Tube between sound and vision.
Back to the practice pad now.
Interesting point Reuben- but who mentioned musicians? Aren't we talking about drummers here!! Sorry fellow tub thumpers, just kidding!!
Which vid were you referring with the two drummers?
Agreed about refinement-less is more comes from age and experience.
I should have went with '...and talent critics' in my pick-up line.
The original poster's you tube video is the one that cuts to the 'pic sync' deception. I haven't yet looked at the other vids.

cut out the background music, and it's pretty much just hammering away on the snare and high-hat....And the rest is just flailing around without any particular purpose or direction.
But then, that's pretty much what you would expect from a kid anyways.
Don't be fooled, grasshopper, by simple mechanical aptitude, that can be learned simply by repetition and has nothing to do with musicianship.

Couldn't disagree more. In fact crap comment. Let me know when your bio's on the Drummerworld site Steve. I'd be keen to check out your musicianship!
It is technique over feel, but the chops are there. From where this drummer's sitting it looked pretty good. She'll get there.
"Flailing around", it's not.
You're a drummer? I shouldn't have to explain it. Are we going to make excuses for not being able to keep time and a simple beat because she's young? If that's what you want, then good for you.
In the meantime, turn off the background music, close your eyes, and listen. That "free form" jazz improvisational feel doesn't work when you have to carry a band with you.
And, if you are a drummer, that's what it's all about.
If you want to be impressed, then I'm happy for you. But, don't ask me to be impressed along with you.

"You're a drummer? I shouldn't have to explain it. Are we going to make excuses for not being able to keep time and a simple beat because she's young?".
I'd say there's nothing wrong with her time. Also it's pretty obvious it's not improvised, so I'm not sure where you get the free form thing from.
There are a few clips of her playing with a band, live. Worth watching.
As for lightening up, I'm cool. I just think you're talking out your backside on this one.
and her unique ability to 'flail' (as you so aptly put it) and not to explore her musical creative abilities...which I'm sure she has, or will have in the near future. And for Christ sakes, she can't be more than 12, how many of the master drummers living today possessed that kind of talent at such a young age?

Day after day, night after night.
Go practice your drums.
Your point is well made, how many musicians had that amount of talent at such a young age?
Unfortunately, I think a lot of them get burnt out, thanks to whoever is "asking" them to practice for hundreds of hours.
Hey, I hope it all works out well for her, but in the meantime, why not let kids be kids.
I'm thinking she must have developed a keen interest in drumming early (I believe her bio mentioned age 5)..and I would like to think her pursuit was the result of a deeply rooted 'gift' from which she derived (at least majority of) her motivation and not from 'overly zealous' parenting. As a parent myself I'm not sure I could put up with non-stop drumming in the house for days on end! BUT- I would encourage any child to pursue their interest or dreams be it mathematics, drums, science, violin, piano, etc., anything but audio (lol just kidding).
I'm sure behind every successful musician, the majority (or at least a decent portion)had 'some' type of guidance/support in their pre-adult years. Of course the key in parenting is finding that delicate balance between support vs a overly domineering presence that may cause harm to a child's formative years.
This child happens to be from Japan, I'm not sure what the public school curriculum is over there in regards to musical training but my gut instinct tells me they're perhaps near or above average in respect to other large Nations. This is significant in my opinion when speaking of the development a child's interest in music.

still cute though!

Thanks, I always enjoy watching the culmination of hard work and talent when they come together.
I'm sure some will criticize her technically or musically, but still pretty amazing to watch.
