I would like to hear from folks that have equipment from Tom Tutay of Transition Audio Design. I just got a custom line stage from him. This was matched to my system which includes one of Tom's phono stages, and two Altec Lansing 1570Bs modded and upgraded by Tom. This stuff is the bomb! I can't believe how good my system sounds now--and I've only just started tube rolling to optimise the sound.
I'm asking for feedback from others. I don't want to sound like some industry shill, and Tom's name deserves to be out there. Tom is a really talented designer and builder who's ideas, creativity, and experience helped solve all of my system's problems. He is an engineer that truly understands audiophiles.
Tom has worked with me to forge my system. I could not be happier with the sound. Tom has expansive knowledge about vacuum tube electronics and the experience to back it up. Tom is also a straight shooter, and a gentleman. I have enjoyed my dealings with him immensely.
Follow Ups:
I have been listening to Toms' creations and updates and mods for years and I continue to be impressed. It is very true he does not get the recognition he deserves. One other thing is that his products are very reliable. Very seldom have I seen any of his work have a flaw circuit wise.
The sound of what he produces is without a doubt state of the art. I have owned alot of gear and his is always neutral allowing you hear the full audio spectrum from top to bottom. If you ever get the chance listen to his rig. You will be impressed. His Altec 1570's are to die for. They are very liquid sounding or shall I say effortless. He uses a simpler preamp than what you guys have but the sound is incredible. When I lived in Ft. Walton Beach I auditioned almost every piece of gear he produced and I was never disappointed. Tom is a true gentleman and a honest individual. I simply trust him with all my audio needs and he is the the first individual I call when seeking to make improvements to my audio system.
Tom is one of the great ones for sure in the audio biz.Besides being a true gentleman, he is an outstanding engineer.Just don't try to reach him through a computer. You will never reach him as he doesn't own one.Strictly an analog man.Old school designer and a honor to call him my friend
He is aways busy building/re-building Altec tube amps or building tube line-stages or all tube phono stages. And he is a Master at both. I happen to own both. He still does modifications for Eastern Electric Minimax pre's and he takes the MiniMax phono stage to another level also.
Just a sweetheart of a guy but don't talk politics with him,LOL, he knows what he likes and dislikes.
Hi Bill, I feel much the same way about Tom. Brilliant designer. True gentleman. What fun I've had over the last few years, building my system with him. I would never have achieved this level of audio perfection without Tom's work. Besides that, I really admire someone that has that level of disdain for computers. I, myself have been known to say that my favorite computer tool is a .357 Magnum..............

He does warranty repair for Airtight, among others.
Ah, I thought so. He worked on an Air Tight ATM2 for me many years ago.
Did very good work, but went a little over board, and did some modifications I didn't ask for.
---------------------------
What did he do?
He was suppose to add XLR jacks to the back of the amp, but instead, removed the RCA jacks, and put in XLR. He should've called first, before proceeding. He also added a soft start warmup circuit for the tubes, and tried to charge me, even though I never asked him to do that. I believe there were some repairs to the amp as well, which he completed successfully.
---------------------------
I can honestly say, If Tom thought the circuit needed a soft start, then it did, he probably saved you a very expensive repair in the future. And if the amp needed some fixing, he did it because it needed it, plus you won't find anybody on the planet who will work for the least amount of money like Tom will. His rates are well below any tech you would have taken it too.Just my 2 cents on his workmanship and ethics.
I have to complaints with his repairs, just the lack of communication. Perhaps my Airtight did need a soft start, but you just don't add modifications to an amp, especially a high end amp costing $7,000 10 years ago, without running it by the owner first.

I talked to Tom last night G, and he was impressed that you still carried the torch for this some 12 years later. He said that the miscommunication was his fault, and was still distressed that he caused you concern. Interesting to note that the charge for the slow start relay and associated circuitry was $60. Pretty cheap insurance for the longevity of a $7000 piece. Do you still have it? Sounds like a nice unit. I hope it has served you well.
No torch, you just joged my memory when you brought up his name.
I sold the Airtight years ago. It was definitely one of the better amps I owned.
---------------------------
That's a significant miscommunication. He should have called. I hope that didn't cause you any trouble (no RCA jack).
