Just wondering what folks think about playing loud music.
Do others playing loud music bother you?
And do you play your music loud enough to bother others, and what do you think about it?For myself i try really hard not to bother my apartment dwelling neighbors.
When I was young, yyeah I blasted my stereo in an all 20 something apt building.. So did others. Back then it was OK.. We were all young and crazy.
In between i lived in a very mixed use building. and a very few folks just would blast music and did not care. In that situation it was really hard not to be angry at the few who just did not give a damn about any inconvienience caused to others. Pounding on doors, calling the cops, fist fights.. all happened there.
Thank goodness I now live in an over 55 only place. Nice and quiet.So what are your thoughts?
And for those able to live in a secluded area, and can play music at rock concert levels and no one cares.. Lucky !! ...Added: this post inspired by report of guy shooting his neighbors over loud music...

one reason, anyway.
i have no right to disturb someone in an apartment. in my house, the boundaries are a little more flexible, no?
/ optimally proportioned triangles are our friends
Some people are unreasonably demanding. If they want the silence of the grave, they should move there. OTOH no one should be unwillingly subjected to sound loud enough to cause hearing damage. In between... it depends. If a rap lover with kilowatt/multi subwoofer car system drives by my house at 4am, I will give him the benefit of the doubt, roll over and go back to sleep. But if he parks under my window, I'm calling the cops. Most conflicts can be negotiated among reasonable people of good will.

Up to 17 hours is fair play for "loud" music, moderate till 21, after that you should turn it down. Dont any of you live with other people? I am more concerned about disrupting the people i live with...

Million miles from home.
Yes we always worry about neighbors hearing are music. We live in a well built house, I can't image living in an apartment with a large audio system, and having people a few feet from the bass bins.
One thing we learned is when we are having a large gathering of friends is to invite all the neighbors, almost all of them show up too, even the old timers.
A small antidote that I'd like to add if I may, at one of are louder functions, my ex showed up somewhat under the influence, ( she should no better she's a nurse ) , she parked her car half on the neighbors lawn. When a few friends commented on her driving as well as a few blonde jokes, she retorted that even if those idiots called the police she wasn't moving her car. The following day when she awoke I informed her that the idiots that owned the lawn that her car was parked on all night was the older couple ( a retired doctor and his wife ) that she spent much of the evening chatting with.
"Do others playing loud music bother you?"
Depends on who it is. Youngsters staying up too late playing music too loud and accompanied by boisterous, coarse jesting and laughter is quite distasteful. On the other hand, the woman in her late 80's who needs earsplitting levels to hear anything at all on her television or radio doesn't bother me in the least.
On a related note, I also don't mind children in neighboring apartments practicing their piano, tuba, or flute lessons, or the banging/thumping that comes with karate practice. Noise can be a very legitimate part of life, and you need some tolerance if you're going to share walls/ceilings/floors with others.
"And do you play your music loud enough to bother others, and what do you think about it?"
I check in with my neighbors periodically, especially when new ones move in, and they've all told me the same thing, that they never hear anything coming from my apartment. Maybe they're just being nice, but I do try to maintain low volume levels at all times of the day or night (and I live in an apartment that seems well designed and insulated against noise).
Since moving into an apartment, I've found that mid-fi equipment, such as an inexpensive integrated amplifier with loudness compensation and tone controls, can be more satisfying to listen to than the higher-end gear I preferred when living in a separate home; low-volume listening does benefit from some form of equal-loudness compensation.
"Just wondering what folks think about playing loud music.
Do others playing loud music bother you?
And do you play your music loud enough to bother others, and what do you think about it?"
I live in a single family detached home so I can play my music without bothering others. If I was in an apartment, I'd likely be a headphones kind of person - or have a stereo that was biased towards playing softly.
"So what are your thoughts?"
You have to be respectful of your neighbors. Sometimes it's the law, but more importantly, it's just being a good neighbor even when it isn't.
I am fortunate that I live in an area that I can get a free standing house - it works - I don't truly blast my music loud, but at the volumes I play, I doubt it bothers anyone.
"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad"
Loud rock and country music was driving me crazy. In the apartment below me a young woman would get up at 6:00 to get ready to go to work and would put on her Patsy Cline records at close to ear splitting levels. I found it hard to believe that somebody could be that inconsiderate but there it was.
It can never bee too loud!
The TRICK I learned back in the 70s was to, when moving in, convince all neighbors you are partially DEAF and therefor play your music a little louder than would otherwise be civil.
Don't abuse the privilage, maintain kind hours and you'll be able to get away with it for years.....I did!
You also may want to periodically play something you hope the neighbors like!
Nobody, for some reason, thinks to question a deaf audiophile.
Too much is never enough
I live two miles from Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and it is surrounded by 55+ condo buildings built around the same time. They probably thought they would typically hear the A.S.O. but tonight they will hear ZZ Top.
I believe in apartment ettiquette. One should be mindful of one's neighbors, up to a point! Do I crank it ALL the time, no, SOME of the time, absolutely! I remember living in an apt. yrs ago and some younger guys move in below me. One night, after midnight, I hear the dreaded thump-thump and inarticulate lyrics! I'm like; "oh no he didn't". Soooo...I fire up the rig, crank it, and throw on Mahavishnu Orchestra followed by El Grupo Folklorico Y Experimental! By the time the side was over there was nothing but sweet silence from downstairs! Slept like a baby ever after!;)
I am in a similar apartment situation, and as I was loading the broken sub in the car, I said out loud 'This thing makes earthquakes'. Suddenly I realized that the three people I share a surface with were all there at the same time.
So, I asked if anybody hears music. I got a 'no', an 'I'm not gonna bother anyone (if I do)' and one 'I'm fine with listening to my neighbors' TV'.
I just 'fill up the room' to listen, and now turn it up some when I want to. I don't blast away like I did when I was a kid.

....which like a lot of things I tend to not think much of. I live in a single family dwelling with neighbors ten feet away on either side. A bunch of years ago the Airport District put acoustic windows in all our houses free of charge if we would continue to let the airplanes fly over the area from the smallish airport five miles away. We've never had a problem with the plane noise, though the thought of one ditching into the neighborhood is one I try not to have.
The windows are two dual glazed sliders with a one inch airspace between them, and they work pretty darned well. You open one slider, reach in a bit and open the other. Fortunately the temperature around here is moderate, and nine times out of ten I don't need to open the windows when blasting music. I've got Boston's first album going full tilt boogie as we speak, and even with dual subs, the neighbors have never complained; movies or music. On the other hand, I rarely listen late into the evening. My worklife has me trained to be a morning person.
But to Elizabeth's question, if my situation was different, I'd respect the neighbors just as I would expect in return. If I have to go to sleep at 10PM, the last thing I'd want is "Party Hardy" Hank and his gal Betty "Gotta Dance To Live" driving me nuts with sleep deprivation.
Every now and then I think about moving to different area so I can afford to retire one day. I'll think about this thread when that day comes to make sure I don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
See ya. Dave

Acoustic isolation
Elizabeth:> Just wondering what folks think about playing loud music. <
If I don’t play it loud I cannot FEEL it!
Elizabeth:> Do others playing loud music bother you? <
Depends on the sounds. You can’t please everybody. I am more likely to change what I am playing based on who I think is near before I will turn it down because someone can hear it.
Elizabeth:> And do you play your music loud enough to bother others, and what do you think about it? <
This is philosophical question. Even when you breathe you kill micro organisms. Do you want to stop breathing so as not to bother others?
Elizabeth:> For myself i try really hard not to bother my apartment dwelling neighbors. <
Choosing to live in an apartment dwelling has consequences. During the day the surrounding noise could be 80 db. The problem I face is I live out in the country. The closest houses are over a hundred yards away. My place is single wall construction. When I crank it the whole house shakes like a giant speaker. The wooden floor radiates and as it is up off of the ground it pushes the sound down the slope away from the house. Out in the yard it is louder than it is in here. When it gets really quite after all these birds shut up, after dark, you can here what I am playing a quarter mile away. So, yeah having neighbors has a cost.
Elizabeth:> We were all young and crazy. <
Age has nothing to do with it. As you get older you have to turn it up to hear it!!
Elizabeth:> not give a damn about any inconvenience caused to others. <
“Acoustical insulation," or more properly "acoustic isolation." If you play your soundtrack loud enough you cannot hear anybody else.
Elizabeth:> And for those able to live in a secluded area, and can play music at rock concert levels and no one cares.. <
No one cares but I cannot assume that no one is bothered.
Elizabeth:> Added: this post inspired by report of guy shooting his neighbors over loud music... <
Arthur Lee composer for the rock group Love went to jail over an incident where his apartment neighbors in Van Nuys were complaining he was playing his tunes too loud.
I want to say than some of this new fangled equipment should share part of the blame, because you have to blast it to get equal volume on all of the frequencies. The mark of good vintage equipment is that it will adjust the frequency curve to be full at lower volumes. Without that all you can do is turn it up!
~~~Our lunacies have been infringed..
I Remember few Summer ago, my neighbor told me they would be away for three weeks, only their teens would be at home and there would be some house parties during that period of time. They came over, pre apologized to everyone that lived around them. At the end, nothing unexpected, music was loud, the conversation at the backyard was loud till 2-3 am, nobody called police. It was annoying for sure.
When my neighbor returned home, everyone just said they were glad that their kids and friends had some fun. Nobody mentioned about the noise at all.
My birds love my music.
As with anything else in this world - it depends. I live in a small town of 2,300 people. The result is we are all a little more tolerent of each other than people that live in a larger community/city. We see each other in church, grocery store, liquor store, school, cafe etc....
If music is being played at "spirited" levels during "regular" hours I'm OK with it. It is no different in my opinion than a lawn mower, snow blower, jet ski, boat, or chain saw.
I live in a single family home so YMMV in a complex.
We ( my wife and I) do a lot of entertaining outdoors during spring, summer, and early fall on our deck and yard. Well, entertaining is a polite term for it; It's 2 blenders going full speed, horseshoes, ladder golf, water skiing, and lots of drinking - lots. The neighbors are always there with us. Heck we even have our Priest there. Result: All the potential complainers are drunk at our house. We do however start early and finish before 10:00 pm (most of the time). It's getting harder with every passing year to get through the next day after "entertaining".
........I was a vegetarian for 15 minutes... until the main course.
"All the potential complainers are drunk at our house."
Hahahahahaha! lol
...... I did when I was in my twentys and lived off campus with several other male and female maniacs in a major college town while attending a University that was (and still is) notorious for being one of the top "party" schools in the nation.
When I reflect back upon my past behavior I'm embarrassed about what an as$h@le I was.
I don't think my neighbors or I have right to disturb each other's peace in any manner, including noise from recorded music.
That said, I am less sensitive (both on the giving and receiving end) during reasonable hours of the day and evenings. While I try to keep the volume reasonable at almost all times, quite low after 10:00 and very low or off after 11:00, I have only complained when a neighbor was playing loud music after midnight on a work night, or after about 1:00 or 2:00 on a weekend. After that neighbor continued, and others also complained to no avail, I became less tolerant of that neighbor then of other neighbors' sporadic transgressions.
I think it's a matter of balance. You don't want to disturb others or be disturbed, but you also need to at least acknowledge the realities of condo living (or close neighbor living) which means occasional interactions that might not be ideal.
___
"If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future."
"might not be ideal" ha, right. I'd vote for a nymphomaniac flight attendant who happens to be deaf as my next door neighbor.
Unfortunately that isn't the case. So I have to deal with what I have.
Depends on what time of day or night it is, both legally and neighborly. It also depends on the persons definition of what loud is. And if if the neighbor is normal or a nut case. I suppose it also depends on my mood, sometimes I like the volume up pretty high because there are certain songs I lose something if you can't both hear and feel the music. I have heard from people that if you have a super duper mega high dollar amplifiers etc.and the speakers are setup properly that you don't have to play it loud to get full enjoyment from the music.To that I say "BULLSHIT". So those of you who know what I mean getting totally drawn into a song by hearing and feeling the music going through your body know what I mean, and those who think the other direction, I'm sorry for what your missing ! So I would say that sometimes YES I do have the right.
have the authority to confiscate your equipment if they're called out more than 2 times in one day.
My last home I had a neighbor who lived almost a block away and for some reason they would blast their music in their backyard (obviously from a PA system aimed outward towards other houses) well into the morning hours..1:00am, 2:00am..
Hey listen, I'm as tolerant as the next guy and I like my music loud at times too!(but inside my own home) and I'll be damned if I'm gonna waste sleep listening to someone else's music (in this case 70's disco music -but the genre is not important) that late into the evening. I phoned the cops a couple times but of course they only showed up once or twice, in fact the vibe I got from the dispatcher was leave well enough alone since cops are out doing more important sh*t (wasn't worded that way, but again-that's the vibe I got)... so much for that ordinance/policy! (San Diego,Ca)..
may the bridges I burn light the way....
Within the first two weeks of our arrival on Guam, many of my team mates went to Andersen AFB and purchased "REALLY NICE" stereo rigs. We're talkin' 1971 vintage silver here. (The Air Force had a much better selection of gear than the Navy exchange.)
The VOLUME WARS began almost at once. E5 and below were housed in a basically open barracks. One big room divided by lockers into four man cubicles. (NO WALLS to even attempt to attenuate the sound.) If the first stereo turned on was playing something you LIKED, all was well and good and right with the world. But it didn't take long before someone would walk in, absolutely detest the song or genre which was playing, and turn on their particular favorite at a higher volume to drown out the "crap from the other cubicle". It didn't take long before someone in another barracks complained about "those hooligans in greens" with their loud music. Our senior chief visited our humble abode at the height of a particularly loud battle between acid rock, motown, and sh*tkickin'. After yanking power cords out of sockets from one end of the barracks to the other, he proceeded to enlighten us as to the error of our ways and inform us that ALL SPEAKERS would be boxed up and placed in storage... NOW! ALL MUSIC WOULD BE HEARD USING HEADPHONES ONLY. (OK, I admit it. That's where my headphone addiction started.)
If we all liked the same types of music, it wouldn't offend if it were a little too loud. (Time appropriate of course) In fact, I often encourage my next door neighbor to crank up his garage stereo when we are outside because I have NEVER heard him play something I don't like.
The problem occurs when we DON'T LIKE what we hear. That's when we get upset and insinuate that others are uncivil or inconsiderate.
... I only play music in the evenings. However I play my music at any volume I want and often till 2, 3 or 4 am. Sometimes even later/earlier.
No close neighbours and a large, virtually sound-proof, home helps.
In my time in suburbia I have noted that usually the guy who is first to complain about loud music on a Saturday night is the same pencil-nose ingrate who sees nothing wrong with starting his noisy lawnmower every Sunday morning @ 6am.
I live in a detached house in a densely populated area with a neighbor on one side. When I play my music loud I know you can hear it if you stand out side my house but just to be safe I don't play it that loud after 10:00 pm. If my neighbor ever complained to me I certainly would respect their request to keep it down.
One of the first things I did when I bought my condo was to turn my stereo up and walk around outside to see how loud it was, The great thing about my system is I can listen at high levels inside but outside it is quite. One of the reasons is I do not like heavy artificial bass. It is unfortunate that more people do not do this the renters are the worst.
pretty much says it all.
Well, if you live in an over-55 community TURN IT UP LOUD! They're all deaf as a post and can't hear it anyway!
Problem solved! :)
Uh, excuse me, my 57-year-old wife will be home in a few hours. I gotta turn the stereo down.........
is when some a**h**e pulls up beside me at a traffic lighgt - windows wide open and stero on "full". Even worse - when they pull up to a convenience store or gas pump under the same conditiomns and walk inside oblivious o the concerns of others.
P.S. Loud sub woofers in cars are very annoying.
He he.
I have ridden for 30 years and don't get it, where did this idiocy come from?
My last place was in a not so nice location that turned to a bad location that got worse and worse over the 17 years I lived there.
Generally on Friday and Saturday nights, gunshots were a common feature.
It was interesting to compare a small caliber handgun to some big heavy hitter soundwise. Then the single shot, or various patterns of multiple shots. Once in awhile just a shotgun blast....
My favorite of all was hearing a small caliber single, with a volley of what sounded like two separate big caliber after a few seconds.. i guess the little gun guy got a big suprise in return.
And yeah a few folks died in the few block vicinty there over the last couple of years I lived around there. Always late night, weekend activity.
I finally moved only one mile away, and it is like night and day. quiet, peaceful, no gunshots. Maybe after another 17 years i will need to move again...
Elizabeth, you are easily the best "tongue-in-cheek" writer on this forum. You're posts never fail to entertain and get a grin out of me.
See my post of 6/8 titled Proper grammar when posting...
I've spent most of my life in rural areas ,so neighbors have never been a problem.
I used to target shoot in front of my house ,as did the neighbor up the hill ,so gunshots weren't unusual for me either.Although ,no one was getting killed.
And another thing...
Last night, I had a hankering for some Maynard Ferguson at a live level. "Gonna Fly Now". It wasn't 20 seconds before one of the kids came and said "Mom's in bed!" So I put on the headphones.
Ya see? Being considerate, not rude or inconsiderate.
Tell that to the next boom-boom jerk you encounter. Ha!! They'd rather shoot you dead than turn it down.
That's what I'm talkin' about.
huge MF fan here. FYI Conquistador is available on BlueSpec cd -if you're into that. sounds great to me- not sure if it's due to the format or the remaster. definetly meant to be cranked.
Some people are disturbed if they can hear absolutely anything; which is ridiculous, IMHO. If you live in an apartment, you'll occasionally hear things. (Now a constant pounding on the floor/wall/ceiling is another matter.) But if you occasionally hear some slight noise, it is not an immediate cause to complain in my book.And it is for that precise reason that I chose to live out in the sticks where my nearest neighbor's window is about 50 feet away from my stereo room.
My two cents worth anyway.
I might on occasion crank Zep or similar for an LP or two or until someone complains. Fortunately, my system won't play at those volumes.
It's incumbent upon all people to be civil and considerate toward others. In a modern society, this shouldn't even be a question.Sadly, at least since the late 1960s, there's been a portion of the population who think they can just do whatever they want. Interestingly, they seem to be mostly Democrats, who proclaim that we should be nicer to each other.
I haven't heard any car audio systems blaring Rush Limbaugh or Mark Levin, ever. Or home stereos blaring Shubert or Beethoven, ever.
Yes, folks, the truth is that it's the Left that's responsible for this crap. The boom-boom, fuk your girl, shoot you in the head, etc. crap. Yet, they want to tell the rest of us how we should behave. :(
Look at what this has done to our schools. When I was in high school, we didn't need an on-site police officer.
There, I feel better already. :)
This message has been moved to a more appropriate venue .
Being considerate towards others in this modern society also means accepting others as individuals and resisting the pull to blame certain people, era's, political persuasion and musical preferences for the demise of your perception of civility. Your reasoning that loud music playing happened as an effect of the sixties (I wonder what happened in the sixties..end of Jim Crow, psychedelic drugs, women's liberation, the rise of the John Birch Society, Marshall amplifiers..what?). And you say that "certain people" ( I wonder who?) felt that they could do whatever they wanted to do (like what..have freedom?). You go further and allude that they are probably "Democrats" ( I wonder which democrats are you referring to?). You cast many aspersions in this post, which has made forget about the point of loud music. By the way, sometimes I play Shubert in my car so loud that it blows my hair back. My recommendation is to be honest about what you really want to say, own your bigotry and find the right forum:)
Yeah, now that you mention it, whenever I'm at a stoplight, it's always Limbaugh or Levin that I hear blaring from another car.
I asked a few drivers who were blasting rap out of their open car windows if they were liberals or conservatives. They showed me their conservative side - the right to bear arms.
I think your theory is severely flawed, at least as it refers to politics.
I can't hear you, my music is up too loud.
I only disturb people when I listen to Disturbed.
I just was being crazy. It was fun, I was high.. I had to plug my ears up close as it was incredibly loud.. Could be heard for whole block plus...
We live in a small flat with one other neighbore in the building upstairs.
When she's around I keep the music pretty low (though usually at satisfying levels) so as not to disturb her.
When she's not around I frequently play it loud and if she were home it WOULD disturb her, as the system can
shake, rattle and roll this level at certain volumes - especially anything bass heavy (think Jah Wobble).
No doubt that would be heard and felt upstairs.
Would I play music at higher volumes more often if it wouldn't disturb anyone? Damn tootin'! - but it ain't cool
(or right) to bother the neighbors with loud music or any other shenanigans... the golden rule ESPECIALLY
applies to our living environments.
I'm 42 and facing moving (yet again). I currently have a great house and the neighours don't care what I play and how loud I play it. Not that I'm a crazy person who goes for concert volume. But I like to listen at, say, louder than TV volume.
I'm more worried about gear and vinyl getting trashed in the possible 1200 mile transit to my potential new location...
Hopefully, my new neighbours will be okay with me!
i have been lucky to live in an area where the neighbors are tolerant and inoffensive.
Hahahaha! That was good!
Yeah, I've got a neighbor who apparently thinks it fine for his dog to be out barking at 5:30 am. Alarm clock? Who needs a stinkin' alarm clock with a neighbor like that!?
:)
Many many years ago we had a neighbor (right behind us) who worked for a large newspaper. He got off work at ~2am. He owned every single yard maintenance appliance in the gasoline version (electric was generally preferred in our area 30 years ago). He had floodlights for his yard. I've set it up enough for you... He wasn't even the noisiest neighbor, we only lasted ~3 years there, saving up all the meantime so we could afford to move.
> > He wasn't even the noisiest neighbor,
Wow! My condolences.
I only felt comfortable doing what I did as the neighbor in question was the
only one within earshot of the music we were blaring. Wouldn't have been
right to drag others into the fracas.
I have a neighbor who's nephew has a car with a massive subwoofer in it. He see's nothing wrong with inflicting his disco music on the entire neighborhood. His car can literally shake my house.
The other pet peeve of mine is when you go to a cottage or campground, and you always get the guy with the AM radio playing loud.
I can't understand the mindset of people who want to inflict their garbage on others. It's rude and very aggravating.
