ok, how many of us are using the 'audio control' app for our smart phones that is an SPL meter? it visually looks and operates just like the ratshack unit but has the added nicety of a smaller digital readout as well.it can be calibrated to a real RS spl meter by following the instructions. i find it quite convenient and less balky to carry around within the confines of my phone. for a quick check of spl wherever you are, its a real boon. i dont expect magico to start using one in speaker development but handy it is.

We have measured the iphone and several apps for sound measurement - out of a curiosity and concern as we manufacture and sell very high end sound analyzers. The iPhone set on a tripod - to minimized reflections was +/- 4dB in level when measuring signals from a small loudspeaker. The results we lots worse when held in your hand - as the microphone(s) were disturbed by your hands presence and remember to turn it around so the mics face the source. Some of the apps that measure relative level - MLS based stuff - were also effected - unless the compresser was turned off - takes software to do this.
Studio six does make an full external mic accessorie package that is generallt +/- 2dB

Above is reponse of Bruel and Kjaer SLM with mic on a tripod - a little bit flatter. But $5K. We rent for less.

It's always amazing to me when audiophiles that spend $1000 on cables with transfer functions deviating less than a quarter of a dB across the audio band will use a $200 sound meter in a way that will produce deviations greater than 2 or even 3 dB. 3dB is a Halving/Doubling of the POWER.
As a counter point - of course - your room is producing +8/-20dB variations in the level. so maybe +/- 3dB isn't so bad.

I don't know what "audio control" is but here are few Apps that I have with me in my iPhone.... including a couple SPL Apps.

I use one from Studio Six Digital, along with their RTA. Seem to work well. Very useful in live venues if only to get a sense of how loud the music is being played at. The best shows we see seem to fall in the 90-92db range. Louder is not necessarily better imho.
Mcondo, I have the studio six digital as well. I think its great, but I think it needs calibration. My friend has a hand held device and the two don't match. I don't have test equipment to calibrate it.
Agree, likely needs calibration but absolute values aren't that important to me. I really just like to compare and relative values are ok to highlight differences.
I find no app named "audio control" in the I Tunes store. Perhaps it is an android app. I do use JL Audio tools, SPL Meter, RTA, and other apps. Some require in app purchases.
