Look at the email (see below) I got regarding a post of mine which they censored as hate-speech, vulgarity, threats of violence, etc. etc. Sure, I was being a little sarcastic toward some others who were being annoying, but I don't see how this qualifies as a violation of their policies...Geez
We appreciate your participation in the eBay Community Forums. We are writing to let you know that we
removed the following post.
Also-- I just wanted to say to the posters immediately
above-- I'm not trying to employ my buyer feedback rating to
decieve people when I began selling. Why you think this
is beyond me. Perhaps you say this because you see the world
as a reflection of yourself...because you are a
deceiver, you assume everyone else to be as well. Buyer
feedback says quite a bit about a persons business ethics
and etiquette. Since a transaction involves an equal
exchange between two parties...why does it even matter
who is giving the money and who is giving the goods...
presumably goods and money are the same thing! Buying is
merely selling in reverse! Why should a buyer who is very
highly thought of by her/his sellers act any differently
when they begin selling? A buyer who pays immediately is
likely to be a seller who ships immediately. Everybody
starts out new...with small FB numbers and all as a
buyer...so yes, I'm going to judge a new seller by their
buyer feedback.
In order for the community forums, which are based on the eBay Community Values, to be a place where
all members can feel comfortable interacting with each other, there are certain types of posts we remove
when they are reported to us. The guidelines for posting in the forums are defined in the Board Usage
Policy. Your post was removed for the following reason:
Including profanity, vulgarity, hate speech, disruptive, or hostile comments, interpersonal disputes, or
threats of violence in a post. For clarification of this policy, please visit this page:
http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=200062944
We understand that most posts that are removed were not intentional violations. We invite you to take
some time to review the Board Usage Policy and policy explanations via the following URLs for clarification
about the types of posts that we do not allow.
While it might have seemed innocent to you, they decided that your calling some people "deceivers" was too much for their (so-called) community standards.
But let this be a lesson why proposed "hate crimes" laws are inherently flawed. A crime is a crime is a crime. It makes no difference WHAT the "motivation" for the crime is. "Motivation" is taken into account when sentencing those who are found GUILTY of a crime.
Remove the "offending prose" and re-post the thing. Or find another venue to sell your items.
Make sense?
Bill
Yeah, I guess so. The whole deceivers thing was a response to a couple of other posters who just assumed that I was trying to use my buyer ranking to fool potential customers when I begin selling myself. I didn't address anybody by name, or even directly-- I was just saying that "you people tend to see the world thru your own eyes". The reason people don't trust others is usually because they themselves cannot be trusted. Just imagine if such mild language as I used on Ebay was grounds for removal on this forum...why there'd be hardly any posts left after the censor got through. And yes, I am going to sell my stuff elsewhere-- like Craig's list-- honestly, I've only been on Ebay for a couple of months, and I think as a whole the organization sucks-- and don't ever buy records on there unless the seller is someone you've already done business with on the outside...because people's record grading skills on Ebay are atrocious.
Granted, there are times that an eBay purchase is almost unavoidable, but I haven't bought ANYTHING there in over four years. The level of "scam" is atrocious. EBay's policies (especially over the past two years) are a nightmare.
The thing that "did it" for me was a case of out-and-out mail fraud. I purchased two (supposedly) NOS tubes from a seller for top dollar. When they arrived, they were OBVIOUSLY used. I then found the auction where the seller PURCHASED those tubes. That auction plainly stated that the tubes were used. When confronted with this, the seller began threatening me with SERIOUS bodily harm (including death threats!) EBay's response to all this? They refused to provide ANY information regarding this seller, even though the Postal Service demanded they do so. Instead, they granted the seller a brand new eBay "identity" so he could continue his rip-offs without getting caught. As it turned out, I discovered the NEW identity for the seller and eBay began to threaten ME for harassing the con artist!
Don't get me started on PayPal. I do not use them and never will, but friends of mine have. They are STILL trying to clean up the mess because PayPal's servers are insecure. One Company I do business with had their identity stolen and it was POSITIVELY traced back to PayPal. They have spent over two YEARS and over $10,000.00 trying to clean up the mess - all DIRECTLY caused by PayPal.
If I HAVE to purchase something from eBay and the seller won't accept a USPS Money Order, it's HIS loss. Of course, I ALWAYS ask the seller FIRST before getting involved in bidding on an item that is listed as "PayPal only."
To paraphrase Lilly Tomlin:
"eBay! We don't care! We don't HAVE to. We're EBAY!"
Realize, this is just *my* opinion, but IN my "humble opinion", eBay is the LAST resort to purchase ANYTHING and PayPal should be avoided at ALL costs!
Bill
P.S. Yes, I realize that THOUSANDS of transactions are completed without a hitch! But it's like trying to outrace a train at a crossing. You'll *probably* make it. But what if you don't?
Bill
Thanks 4 the reply. There are situations where it is perfectly OK to use eBay...so you may want to consider giving it a second try. The safe way to deal on eBay is to buy only from people you already know-- by this, I mean there are sellers on there who also operate outside of eBay-- example, I regularly buy records off of a dealer who has his own website and business...he also sells on eBay and sells items which are not listed on his private website. In cases like these, where you already have established a relationship with sellers, I think it's OK. Paypal does suck, but they more or less have a monopoly on the business at this point and many, many organizations and individuals use them. I once had a problem with them when they took $$ out of my account (an instant process)and they told me it could be over a week for it to be deposited back into my account. I called Paypal to discuss it and asked WTF they could withdraw the $$ in mere seconds yet it took several business days
to re-deposit it. I left the conversation more confused than before. I've heard complaints from others who phoned Paypal to talk to a live person...I've heard recordings of those dealings and from what I can gather, Paypal has only one person operating the customer assistance line. Their international fees are atrocious, like 40 - 50 dollars out of a $1000 transaction for certain countries. Paypal was featured on NBC and it was one of those investigative reports. At present, they're one of the few alternatives available for transfers of funds between individuals...even I have to admit, they sure are convenient and fast!
