I heard a Philips minisystem (it had ribbon tweeters and I think it was MCM760 or something) a while back that sounded good in the store and cost $160 but I think it's discontinued.
For $100, it's tough if you need a CD player and all. Does it have to be portable, or are you just looking for cheap? For maybe a couple hundred, you can get something nice. Go on Craigslist.org or a thrift store and get the cheapest working stereo receiver that doesn't look like total junk. Lots of people sell them. For a CD player, if you don't have one get a cheap new one or you can use a DVD player as well. For speakers, get something like the Infinity Primus bookshelves that go pretty cheap on the Internet and people seem to like here. They go cheap on Ebay and some other places. Buy refurbished or "B-stock" if you can find it. Or check Craigslist for new speakers.
