Well, This is the Audio Asylum not the Audiophile Asylum so I was wondering if anybody had some good recommendations for a little mini system or a boom box that sounds pretty good, has a reliable CD player and radio. Cassette player would be ok too. Also, I do not want to spend much over 100.00.
Thanks,
Sown gi

From HK...
I heard a Philips minisystem (it had ribbon tweeters and I think it was MCM760 or something) a while back that sounded good in the store and cost $160 but I think it's discontinued.
For $100, it's tough if you need a CD player and all. Does it have to be portable, or are you just looking for cheap? For maybe a couple hundred, you can get something nice. Go on Craigslist.org or a thrift store and get the cheapest working stereo receiver that doesn't look like total junk. Lots of people sell them. For a CD player, if you don't have one get a cheap new one or you can use a DVD player as well. For speakers, get something like the Infinity Primus bookshelves that go pretty cheap on the Internet and people seem to like here. They go cheap on Ebay and some other places. Buy refurbished or "B-stock" if you can find it. Or check Craigslist for new speakers.
Some people have written good things about some of the JVC boomboxes. They are very gaudy.
I bought my son a Cambridge Soundworks CD/Radio and it is excellent. More than $100, but worth it.
I bought my wife a Cambridge clock / radio / CD player / iPod dock for Christmas and she loves it. It's not a high end audio device but it's sound is surprisingly full. It also plays a lot louder than you'd expect for something the size of a shoe box. The Cambridge's styling is conservative and unobtrusive which was important to her too since the thing sits on a side table in our living room. I think this particular model has been discontinued but I see that Cambridge has a similar one that adds a DVD player and video output on clearance for only $225. My experience has been that the Cambridge radios are pretty reliable. I've owned a model 88 radio / CD player for nine years. My 12 year old daughter has it now and the Cambridge continues to work flawlessly.
Is there a particular model that you guys like? This unit will reside in my master bath area, although anything that can be portable would be a plus also.
Thanks,
Steve
I checked the model number on ours and it is the i765 which has the DVD capability and video output. They're $300 or $245 for "open box" (Cambridge has retail stores) and B stock units.
