Having listened to alot of headphones including the Senn 650,600 and AKG 701 among others I feel the new Denon is the current stand out headphone.Compared to the Senn 650 the D5000 has good bass authority with a sweet teble presence able to do just about everything right.I sold the 650 awhile back because of it's inability to get complex passages down pat.In relation to the AKG 701 which I loved I felt it lack a bass presence which was my only complaint. The Denon changes all this the as it combintiond the bass of the 650 with the accuracy of the 701.The craftsmanship of the D5000 is nothing short of steller with a high quality stock cord to go alone with it.Headphone listening has never been better.
Amp synergy and impedance matching are very important points to remember (as always and frequently not mentioned). A headphone (like a speaker) needs proper matching to sound it's best. Sometimes, I am amazed at how overlooked this simple issue is for most philes IMO.
YMMV as always.
Of course,my impressions were done though a tube amp and the Rega Saturn. Some people might plug the Denons into an I-pod and think it sounds good. Also this applies to headphones in general where they each have there own pros and cons.
I'm gonna borrow a friend's pair in the next week. He waxes poetic about them. I don't expect them to supplant my balanced R10s (nothing has come close so far), but they seem reasonably priced for their build quality and performance level.
How does the DA5000 compare to the Beyerdynamic DT880?
I bought and quickly resold a pair of HD600s because they were too dark and veiled. I tried a pair of HD650s for a half hour and found them to be quite good when used with my headphone amp.
As you may guess from my question, I went with the DT880s and am pretty happy with them. Of course, there is always anothe better set of cans around the corner!
BTW, what is the DA5000 worth?
"Blue meters, big watts. This must be Heaven!"
Don't know about the DT880s because I havn't heard them but I did get to listen to the DT990 and thought the Denon was superior. The retail price is $700 but can be found cheaper around the web.
