Mr. Audiopolous:Very excellent and amusing post!! I think you nailed down all of the different types quite well...
Funny you should mention light bulbs though... I find I like to use a dimmer for my audio room. When lightbulb filaments are not subjected to full voltage, the filaments vibrate and make a noise - commonly referred to as "singing". (This is probably due to the fact that when the dimmer applies a lower voltage to the filament, it does not heat up as much which somehow leads to more/different mechanical vibration.
In passages where there is complete silence, a singing lightbulb nearby IS audible and is no better than a furnace fan, fridge motor or any other annoying source of household noise.
Candles are the only proper way to illuminate an audio sanctum. :o)
Or, if you have a digital front end complete with CDP, jitter reducer, digital active crossover, 6 channel preamplifier, and three separate stereo amplifiers for tri-amping... you don't need lights. All of those LED's are bright enough to give the room a sort-of 'nuclear-ish' kind of glow. Very relaxing!!
Cheers,
And yes, the type of lighting used can affect the audio system especially if its on the same circuit.

My CDP has one, huge, bright blue one that pierces my eyes if I am listening. I actually had to put tape over it because I SWEAR it made my system sound worse. One of those things when squinting at a led, makes it hard to listen. Funny you mention that though...WHat ever happened to the plain, glowing red led?
All the best,
Hello Audiopolous family:Equipment in the early 80's was silver with nice wood side panels and pretty green or blue or green/blue backlit analog displays.
That was deemed "tacky" by the masses, so we then got the "All equipment must be black" syndrome of the late 80's / early 90's. Problem with BLACK is that ALL LED colors match with it. Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange. It all looks good - except now your rack looks like a Christmas tree with lights off due to all of the different LED colors.
YUCK!
Then, the late nineties came around, and we, as a society, are suffering "monolithic" bling-bling syndrome. Everything has to be BIG and BOLD yet simple and monolithic and EXPENSIVE and RICH looking. Look at the auto industry for example - cars now need to have 4 foot high doors with short little windows. Trucks are a lane-and-a-half wide. The only company to make something SMALLER was HUMMER.
Go figure.
Enter - Brushed or bead blasted aluminum 1/2" thick front plates with ONE BIG MONOLITHIC BLUE 25Watt LED right smack in the middle.
ANd yes. It's blinding.
Welcome to the new world order my friend. But guess what. This entire generation, as far as fashion and style goes, is all about REHASHING old ideas, adding a twist, and calling it something new. Just can't wait until 1" thick exotic wood panels are going to start appearing on the sides of our beloved boutique silver gear. It will look about the same as the stuff from the late seventies/early 80's but it will be MORE MONOLITHIC and WASTEFUL and EXPENSIVE. Smaller and environmentally minded is OUT baby - BIG BOLD AND RICH is IN IN IN!
Homo Sapiens fascinate me. I miss my home planet terribly though!
Cheers,
Buy a better dimmer, or a heavy duty light bulb with heavier filaments that don't resonate. How Stuff Works - Dimmer Buzzing

but the truth of the matter is that the only way you'd get that many responses is if you were posting about the Grate Randi, or DBT's.I have to run back to Central now......images of SamTubes are appearing before me.
