the beef i have with sony is that they always try to come out with some proprietary stuff to confuse the customer and force him to continue to buy sony equipment because other stuff will now not be compatible with what he already got.for example - memory stick - is one such scheme, you buy a sony digital camera and then you have to buy memory sticks from sony, when there are universal and perfectly good flash memory formats available. what a ripoff.
another problem with sony is that they make music so are obsessed with copyrights. for this reason minikisk players have no digital outputs, and other such bullsh*t
one more example, i had a sony portable cd player which said on the label that it could recharge AA rechargeable batteries in it. but it turned out that it only recharged special sony batteries - they have added extra circuitry just to make sure that other brand batteries will not work -- their sony batteries had an extra third contact on the side for that.
before buying anything sony, i take a long time to think about what they might have messed up on purpose to make more profit...
i also am very suspicious of all sony "inventions" such as minidisc and SACD, it all comes down to copyrights with sony
You said:"for this reason minikisk [sic] players have no digital outputs,"
The Sony MXD-D3 (discontinued), MXD-D5C (discontinued), and MXD-D40 have no digital outputs for reasons unknown to me. Whatever Sony's reasoning was for not including digital outputs on these players, it was not due to copyright concerns. All Sony MD-only home decks made in recent memory (i.e., decks with no internal CD sections) have digital outputs. My MDS-JB930 and MDS-JA555ES have both coaxial and optical digital outputs. Even some portable MD players and recorders have digital outputs.
Sony makes some nice DVD players as well as some really nice CD players. Most of Sony's products however are mass-market consumer products, which may not live up the the high standard of the audiophile, but nonetheless they serve their purpose.
I like some of Sony's high end digital products. In particular, their SACD players are over acheivers, and the ES models have always had superior construction quality. I use a 7000 dvd player as a transport, and as such it is one of the biggest sleepers in all audio. Some of the ES amps are pretty good, and in recent years a few of their speakers are respectable. High end mfrs. and dealers like to bash them because Sony's scale allows them to underprice the smaller firms. No one is all things to all people, and some feel their cheaper lines tarnish the brand. It's tough when you're #1. Sony makes around half of the world's production of some equipment types. I try to forget brand, and judge gear by performance and quality.
They are not any worse (or better) than other mass market electronics like Pioneer, etc. They are just the biggest and most agressive hence they are subject to what I call the "Microsoft Effect".
They make great TVs & monitors, noise cancelling headphones, Walkmans, some hi-end components ....... and so do others in this competitive market. Similarly their software varies from mediocre to excellent as do other brands.Personally I find knocking Sony, or any brand for that matter, rather tiresome and a waste of energy. If you hate them, or any brand for reasons rational or irrational, then do not buy their products. Your choice. There is plenty to choose from.
