Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here and I'm relatively new to tube amps. I have a pas3 in original condition and would like to keep it that way as much as I can. However, I would like to try and get the most out of it. So, I'm wondering what I would gain from removing the tone controls. In what ways would I expect the sound to change. I would hope I would get more detail but also more of that tube sound....lush, smooth, musical,? I'm hoping some who have made this mod, and others, will share what exactly the mod brought to their listening experience. Cheers

If your pas-3 is a pas3-X you won't gain anything since the tonecontrols
are out-of circuit when centered.
If it's a older ( non-X) i do not know. But you could compare with a
passive pre-amp ( containg only a pot to reduce the signal ) from a high-level source.
Trust your ears !
Well, I'll answer my own questions on this one. I bypassed the tone controls following Curcio's instructions and ended with dc current at the outputs. Enough dc current in fact that the woofers on my speakers were popping in and out as if I was touching the leads on a 9volt battery. I then returned it to original and re-did the bypass following instructions from PeterCapo. This method included the addition of a 1.0uf capacitor to block the dc from the outputs. The results were quite profound. It was like a veil had been lifted from the sound. More focused and open. Overall a lot more of what I expected from a tube preamp. A lot more detail without loss of that tube musicality. I would recommend anyone considering doing the bypass to go ahead. It's easily reversible but I'm very happy leaving it as is.
Hi, I too followed the curcio guide to remove tone controls from my PAS3. Is there a way to check if DC is being leaked to the speakers? Thanks in advance.
