So they opened a brand new Circuit City today in my neighborhood. They sent a coupon for today only so I figured it'd be a good time to start my DVD-Audio collection.I walk over to the small CD section, first checking to see if they're mixed in with the CDs. Nope. I walk down each aisle of the CD section to see if they're all in one spot, kinda like what Best Buy does. Nope. BTW, I checked their website beforehand just to make sure they carried hi-res formats and sure enough they do...on their website. So I ask the pimple-faced teenager working in the area, "do you guys carry DVD-A and SACDs?"
"Umm...yeah, they're right over here" she replied, leading me over to a small SACD section between the audio gear dept and the cd dept.
"Thanks but I'm looking for DVD-AUDIO discs in particular" I said, anticipating the response I'd eventually get.
"Let me go ask my manager, I think we have them" and off she ran.
"Hello sir, what can I help you with" the confident manager said.
"I'm looking for DVD-AUDIO discs, you know, surround sound, high-resolution music" I replied.
"Sure, our music DVDs are right over here and they'll look great on a high-resolution TV" he said, motioning me towards the concert DVD-VIDEO discs.
At that point I gave up. That's the second lousy experience in a row for me at two different Circuit City stores. I will NEVER go there again FOR ANYTHING.
It's sad that both of these great formats are in such bad hands the majority of the time. Between that and the morons that bicker here and on other forums over which one is better are sure to send both the way of DCC's.
It will be because of those two reasons should these formats fail. Then we'll all become slaves to the MP3 future so many think is around the corner.
Sad sad sad...
Follow Ups:
I just got into this format (DVD-A) and have to agree with you- there are salespeople that have NO CLUE what DVD-A or SACD even is!Case in point- Future Shop here in Canada doesn't carry DVD or SACD- hard ware OR software- they don't even know what it is!!!! The only person there who knew anything about it is a friend of mine who's been into the high end SACD from the get to! He confided in me that Future Shop doesn't even acknowledge when a DVD video player has DVD-A capability, nor do they plan on carrying it!!!
So much for marketing- there is a mint to be made and nobody knows about it!!!
OK, So I spent almost 7,000 dollars on a DLP project TV, a Polk home theatre surround sound system, sub woffer, speaker stands, monster cables, extended warranties on everything and an installation package.
The local installation vendor that circuit city farms the job out to, can't seem to be honest about arriving during the four hour window that I had to take off work to accomodate. 2-6PM just wasn't good enough, and they call to say the guys running late (at 5:50PM) but will be there 'soon'. At 6:30 I called them to tell them to reschedule. One week later they call at 9PM to let me know that the guy will be there between noon and 4PM the following day. I schedule another foour hours off of work. The guy calls me from 40 miles away to say he would be there in 20 minutes. 1 hour and 45 minutes later he shows up (4:30). Well I rescheduled when he missed the window, thirty minutes before. So I decide that I will install it myself. I call the store that I bought the crap from and ask to speak to a manager. Well, the manager is in a meeting (at 4:45PM on a Friday....I doubt that) on 'loss prevention' ie, shoplifting. 'Sorry' is the response but you'll have to call back later. My response is, 'so you are telling me that this meeting about possible shoplifting is more important than speaking to a customer who has spent 7,000 dollars there and cannot get paid services delivered?' 'Sorry, blh blah blah......'\
Well, guess what? Circuit City just lost a customer - and the 7K home theatre is not the only things I have purchased there in the past, but it will be the LAST! PS- Monday I will file a suit in small claims court against CC for the failure to deliver on goods and services that where purchased and paid for in full. Let them spend there precious manager's time city on his DUMB ASS in court.

and she'll point out the places where DVD-A should be (and aren't) and the small supply of SACDs next to the little Sony surround demo. So there is ONE CC employee that does, in fact, know the new formats. But the stores don't carry much.BUT! Worse than CC is Borders! Yes they have DVD-A but because the packaging doesn't have a security lock format, they keep them locked up in a cabinet that nobody can see without knowing they are there. This absolutely insures no sales. This is still the case after a year of being on the market.

Every Circuit City store I've been to in recent months has had a DVD-Audio kiosk similar to the SACD kiosk at the back of the store. Unfortunately, Circuit City has a paltry selection of DVD-Audio discs.

He saw me first looking at SACDs then and DVD-As and cautioned me that they were a different format. I explained I had a combi player, and he smiled and lamented how neither had taken off like one would have hoped, and lamented the paucity of their stock (I was looking for Chicago, which they didn't have; which no one around here has). They do have identical micro surround systems set up for both formats so you can stand in the middle, but I've never seen anyone trying them out. And they haven't added new titles in months.
I ended up getting the Sam Cooke compilation. Even on these there were only two titles, and three of the old Abko oop cds.

I was in a Sony store and I asked the clerk if they had any SACD players. He said he would check. He then turned to another clerk and said, "Do we have any FACD players?"I don't expect the people working hard at BlockBuster to necessarily know about home theater, but you would think someone working at a Sony-only store would at least know what SACD was.
