I can't see anything in the manual that would let me keep the player turned on for any length of time greater than the 20 minutes.
Follow Ups:
...most, if not all, Panasonic players have the auto-shut-off power conservation feature. The Technics DVD-A10 I used to have (Technics is part of Matsushita, like Panasonic) had the auto-shut-off feature too. That was the one thing I really didn't like about the player.

You might try pressing and holding the menu button to see if other options show-up. A friend told me that worked on his Marantz 8300. I have not tried it yet on my Samsung HD1000, since it takes 30 minutes to go into standby it does not bother me.

HighEndWire,How does your friend use this "hidden" menu on the Marantz 8300?
Any special tricks on region codes or other goodies?Best
He just used it for the going to sleep problem. Have not asked him what pops up as other options. If you are looking for multi-region, some players, e.g. Linn, will be guided by the 1st piece of software in it (I was told this by a Linn employee asking questions about the Linn Movie Classik) so that if you put a Region zero disc in it to start with it will be configured for multi-region. As I noted have not tried it with my Samsung HD1000. I believe it goes to standby after 30 minutes (and its fan shuts off) and it does not bother me. I don't have anything except a few Region zero DVDs and I have not tried them in the player as yet.

I chose to defeat it - it would drive me crazy, especially as I have to leave it on or switch on "Video Off" manually as you can't do it from the remote. And that really drives me crazy!

My DVD3300 does it too...
...has the auto-shut-off feature. Matsushita (Panasonic and Technics) has incorporated that feature into most, if not all, of its DVD players over the past few years.

DVD lasers have a finite lifetime...My Sony does it, too, I just turn it on and play a CD before I use the DVD player to give it a bit of warmup time...

I know the light output from the laser will drop over time.
And the device will break down eventually. At least our lasers outlive our drive mechanisms. :)
I thought about buying a used Theta Carmen a few weeks ago... My dealer is a Theta dealer, and he advised me to be careful of hours of usage on it. Apparently, the Carmen lasers are only specced for about 1000 hours of use. And the problem is that whenever a DVD menu is playing, the laser is on... So watching a movie and falling asleep with the menu on killed alot of their customer's Carmens :(
