All I want is two track audio. I want to get a DVD player that will play DVD-A and SACD. Are there titles with two track, high res. audio on them or do I need a DHT decoder?
Thanks...Tre'

Follow Ups:
All you need is a player, possibly universal to handle CD, SACD, DVD-A, etc., set to output only stereo and a selection of discs with 2-channel tracks. Virtually all SACDs have them and most, but not all, DVD-As.
almmost all DVD-As have different top level menues and the default seems to be MCH. I cannot seem to get my denon 3910 to default to 2 ch DVD-A tracks, it always plays in MCH if i just hit the play button. It works flawlesly with SACD, all SACDs will play 2ch when i hit play.

Well, Denons are a bit harder to run this way than Pioneer-based machines which can be set to default to DVD-A and 2-channel. Even then, there is often uncertainty about whether you are getting a mix-down or a true stereo source.I have a little 6" LCD monitor (circa $120) that I keep for accessing menus. That lets me pick what I want without a big monitor.

...as I also only listen to stereo only with my 3910, is that when I get a new DVD-A disc I hook up my 9" portable TV to the player in order to see the menus, write down on a sticky note the remote-button-steps you need to make to play the stereo tracks, then put a sticky note on the inside of the DVD-A. Saves guessing down the road. A pain, yes, but it helps that I tend to buy DVD-As in bunches, so I only have to hook the TV up occasionally.
I usually hit the "top menu" button on my remote and pray (someone had enough sense to code the DVD-A sensibly)
... if someone actually went to the trouble to write firmware that would:
1. parse the audio_ts and video_ts directories on the DVD-A
2. determine which is the best stereo format (in order of preference, MLP 2.0, LPCM 2.0 on audio_ts, LPCM 2.0 on video_ts, downmix MLP 5.1, ...)
3. play that as a default if the user has specified that they only want to listen in 2chunfortunately, this is probably unlikely to happen, esp. as dvd-a navigation and decoding is now typically embedded in the chipset and not handled by firmware at all
until that happens, the best approach is to maintain a spreadsheet or some sort of list that lists the location of the stereo track for each title (ie. MLP 2.0 is in Group 2, or the best stereo track is actually the LPCM 2.0 track on video_ts) - i believe there is even a web site out there that tracks this info but i can't seem to find it just then.
and of course the format is dead so nobody cares (insert evil grin) :-)

well, other than the fact that DTS as a company releases some DVD-Audio from time to time DTS as a format has nothing to do with DVD-A and/or SACD. A DTS decoder will not let you hear DVD-A or SACD.What seems to be the problem? no sound from the digital (toslink/coax) connection?
![]()
I am told that a DTS disk will have no output at the analog outputs of the player. That it only outputs to the digital output and that they need to be connected to a DTS decoder.
I don't have a player yet.
Thanks for your help....Tre'

. . .DTS is a company that makes the DTS compression technology and releases DVD-A discs and DTS-encoded CDs.DTS-encoded CDs (and movie DVDs) will output via the analog jacks if the player has a DTS-decoder built-in. otherwise, your processor/receiver will have to do it via a digital connection.
a DTS DVD-Audio disc will ONLY output via the 6-analog jacks because you can't output DVD-Audio via a digital connection at full resolution.
i understand your confusion, and it lies in the fact not all DTS releases use DTS-encoding. they should have come up with a different name to release their discs.

"i understand your confusion, and it lies in the fact not all DTS releases use DTS-encoding."This seems rather odd. What "DTS releases" don't have a DTS track?

"a DTS DVD-Audio disc will ONLY output via the 6-analog jacks because you can't output DVD-Audio via a digital connection at full resolution."Will a DTS DVD-A (the ones that say, DTS decoder needed) output to the mixed stereo outputs on the DVD-A player?
Thanks for your help, this is the question I have been trying to ask.
Thanks....Tre'

First of all, the DTS track on a DVD-Audio disc has nothing to do with DVD-Audio, it is there for potential playback by people who do not have a DVD-Audio player (most DTS DVD-Audio discs include a DTS track, similar to other releases having a DOlby Digital track for backward compatibility).> Will a DTS DVD-A (the ones that say, DTS decoder needed)
> output to the mixed stereo outputs on the DVD-A player? If your player has a DTS decoder, it should be possible to do this, you would need to set the appropriate DTS/stereo settings, though.

For 2 channel, all you need is stereo, right? So why would you posit this (or DTS) as a possibility?
I was told by a language 'authority' if enough people use a wrong/nonexistent word it'll go into the dictionary and become valid, irregardless (sic)

Every DVD-A and SACD has at least a hi-rez stereo track.you will need a universal player to play both DVD-A and SACD, and decoding will be done on board the player unless the player and your receiver are both equipped with iLink.

I can't help it if people release DVD-A's in defiance of the specs :PIn multi-channel recordings, the DVD-Audio PCM specification allows each track to be recorded with a number of different factors. These include:
* The sampling rates and sample size can be set individually for each track. For example, you could use 24/96 for the front channels and 16/48 for the rear.
* A track for a front center channel may be present or a virtual center channel can be reproduced from the two front speakers.
* Downmixing of multi-channel tracks into a 2-channel mix if a separate 2-channel set of tracks is not present. If a set of 2-channel tracks are available they will be automatically used instead of the multi-channel downmix. The downmixing technology is referred to as "System Managed Audio Resource Technique" or SMART.
* Whether Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) lossless compression is used or uncompressed PCM.
