The cheap cd players at the local electronics big box store cost $100-200. If I want an inexpensive CD player, it seems I should just buy a $40-50 DVD player from a department store because they do play cd's. What downside is there to this plan? Before I do it I thought I would ask - am I missing something?Thank you,

... Measured around 70-80db S/N above noise floor. Almost no stereo separation. This wasn't subtle, it was really pretty bad. Unusually so. I wouldn't reccomend it.I dont know if they aren't using audio-grade op-amps, or a 32khz/12bit dac, or what. But this wasn't "golden ear" stuff... this was bad even if you had a lead ear.
Would you be be able to recommend a CD player for around $100 US? So far I only have regular cd's. Is there one in this price range that is either DVD-A or SACD?

The Panasonic S47, Toshiba 3950/3960, Toshiba 4960, and Samsung HD-841I know that the Panny does DVD-A and the 4960 and 841 do DVD-A & SACD they are actually an identical unit on the inside except the samsung supports HDMI upconverting.
I am sure you can get any of these units online for under $100.

Samsung HD-841 universal player at Costco for about $100. Sounds incredible for a single c-bill and modifiable to sound outstanding.
