I just spent a bunch of cash (for me atleast) for a 5.1 setup of Paradigm Atoms (4), the Paradigm center speaker that goes with them and the 100 w (I think its 100w or close to it) sub.I can't aford to go with tubes and seprate components yet, so I picked up a Harman/Kardon AVR 525 for $500 and want to get the best possible sound out of it. Atleast, until I can upgrade to a better amp.
What do you think would be best? A quality CD player, SACD or DVD-A? It sounds like SACD is being phased out so I'd rather not do that and CD doesn't offer "advanced resolution".
Is DVD-A going to be around for a little while and is the AVR525 good enough to notice the difference between CD and DVD-A?
Currently I'm using a Liteon DVD-R (lvw-5001) which is a nice cheap DVD recorder, but I think its weak at best for audio play back. I need to upgrade to something better either way. If that Dual sided disc or what ever it is, is out soon I can wait for it too.
I'm looking to spend not too much over $100.
Thanks for any help.
ps I upgraded from a crappy Aiwa reciever and JBL satalite speakers, so this was a BIG upgrade for a non-audiophile like myself and I just want to get the most out of it.

I recommend you consider the Toshiba SD 4960; a new "universal player" which does CD, DVD-V, DVD-A and SACD. I got mine a couple of months ago from the J&R Service, for $149. I love it, it plays everything I throw at it well.

Can you select the DVD-A group with 2-channel without using a TV?

Get a universal player so you can pick from a wider selection of titles and have fun with multichannel. If you end up upgrading your system later on, then you can worry about whether dedicated players will give you better sound. Both the Pioneer and Toshiba should be good options. You can search the three digital boards here for opinions on them.

... here's a link to my mods post at audiocircle.comhttp://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=12613
I haven't received the parts yet, and I'll be on vacation next week (getting out of the NY City blast zone), so I can't say what the result will be yet. However, the sound of the stock 4960 is pretty damn good, so I certainly feel that modding it is warranted.
