..are listed in the J&R ad in the June issue of Sound & Vision. They are:* Samsung DVD-HD941 Universal @ $299.99
* Panasonic DMR-EFF DVD-A plus DVD-Recorder @ 349.95The Samsung is not yet on their web site. The Panasonic web site handling DVD's and recorders is down right now. So I have not further info.
My guess is that the HD941 is an upgrade to Samsung's HD931 DVD-V machine (although the "slot" is in a different location).
The Panasonic ad does not mention "remastering", but the "55" designation probably means it contains the DVD-V and DVD-A basic capabilities of the S55, which are outstanding.
Follow Ups:
I picked up the following from a Toshiba press release:The SD-4960 (June 2004, $179.99) is Toshiba's first multi-channel audio model supporting both DVD Audio and SACD. The unit also offers Digital Cinema Progressive Scan (3/2 Pulldown), ColorStream Pro™ component video outputs. The SD-5970 (August 2004, $199.99) features HDMI and video upconversion to 720p/1080i. HDMI is the first industry supported uncompressed, all-digital, audio/video connection in a single interconnecting cable. HDMI can support uncompressed digital video up to HDTV level resolution.
There are two Samsung universals(SACD and DVD-A)coming out: the 841 and the 941. The 841 should be available under $200. Apparently the 841 has DVI out and the 941 has HDMI and a few other features which no one seems to be sure about. Check out AVS forum for threads there. Toshiba will have two new universals as well. One for $149 and one at $199 with either DVI or HMDI out. All to go along with the Pioneer $150 Universal. Lots of cheap ways to get into HiRez now.

Plus, the Pioneer uni player is on clearance at Best Buy. A new Pioneer replacement??
![]()
Was at Best Buy this past Sunday and it was not reduced, or at least not marked as such.I noted two other Pioneer players in Hi Fi Choice magazine, the 668 and 868. I inquired about them to Alex P and he stated they are European models. I don't believe I saw them on Pioneer's website when I last looked so that is why I asked Alex about those two players.

Quite interested in how it will stand up to the Pioneer 563A.Sorry, no experiences with the players you mentioned. I plan to try the Tosh just for curiousity sake.
I did try both the Panasonic F87 and the Pioneer 563A players. Returned both after about two weeks.

Actually, the audio was very good for the buck spent but the video was not acceptable by any means.I tried about 10 DVD titles on my 50" progressive scan Toshiba and could not live with the picture. Blacks were beyond dark and the whites washed out terribly.
Interesting enough, someone else mentioned that about this player also on the audioreview.com. most others only spoke about the audio. He also returned it.
