Just bought a DVD-S55 at Fry's for $79 and I tried to play the stereo tracks of the Grateful Deads American Beauty. I pressed the group button for groups 2 or 3 and pressed enter as instructed in the manual. It acts like it wants to play and shows downmix on the panel but after it gets to 4 seconds (with no sound) it starts spinning fast and then seems to pause......when you hit play it goes to the next group and the only group that plays is group 1 which is the surround mix. The disc cover says it has three versions: stereo, multi-channel and dolby so I assume the disc is alright. Am I missing something? Is this machine defective? Is there really no stereo mix on American Beauty? This is my only DVD-A disc so I cannot check it with another disc. The only other (sort of DVD-As) I have are the HDADs from Classic Records which only have a stereo 24/192 track on the DVD-A side. They play perfectly. Thanks.

Follow Ups:
Ric,Good to hear you have it working correctly now.
I remember when I visited a while back and you had the magnificent (but over-priced) Audio Synthesis, we listened to the MLP tracks on that Grateful Dead album. I thought that the sound was pretty damn good, so I was wondering if you can recall that presentation and what you are hearing now with the $79 Panasonic.
I'm sure you're contemplating ripping out the analogue circuitry and sticking in one of your custom output stages and adding some power supply mods. What potential do you see here?
Given what the lads on Digital Drive have been doing to those Toshiba 3950/3960s (I was surprised you didn't add to that debate) there's going to be some interesting goings on in Boulder Creek once you attack that puppy with your trusty soldering iron.
Regards,
Geoff

I had thought that the 2 channel mix would be in another group. When I hooked it up to the TV again and tried the audio button on the remote it showed which mix it was. By pressing the audio button I can switch between stereo and surround. However, I have to have the TV hooked up to do it as there is no indication on the machines display as to what mix is playing. Drats. Minor annoyance which I will gladly accept for $79 plus tax!

BTW, how did you like the recording?

for DVD-A?

For about that amount it should be possible to find a 4" lcd monitor.
Very usefull for menu's and DVD player setup.
If your monitor shows "downsample" it sounds to me like the DVD player is trying to send a digi signal out. There may be a feature on your player that allows you to switch the digi out to "on" or "off."BTW this disc plays the stereo layer fine in my Toshiba SD-4900. I am only using the stereo outputs, hooked up to my preamp.
