Was thinking of getting into DVD-A for 2 ch hi-rez stereo only. So need suggestions on such a player and of course with good video capabilities as well. The cheap prices of players does concern me however and am hoping DVD-a is not on the way out ( by trying to discount these players so to get rid of them ) as I'm about to get in. Any feedback would be helpful.
Follow Ups:
Universal player for about $139 at Best Buy.

There is the growing list (I know you know it) of discs the 563 that won't output high rez; Wilson Live at the Roxy, Greendale. That was why I passed on it (passed, with an "a") and went for the Panasonic.

Nice unit with lots of features (including HDCD) for $129.00. Hasn't missed a beat on anything I've thrown at it yet. Not sure how DVD-A could be classified as "dead" with lots of players coming out.Sooner or later the issues hopefully will be straightened out with compatability for the 563A. I returned the one I bought even though I got it at Best Buy for $99 open box. Nice universal player for the dollar. I do believe Pioneer has a few other universals on the market but not sure about the compatability issues with those.

I got the DVD-F61A at Costco for $99, a 5 disc player.I do agree a Universal player would be better for you. I went DVD Audio only because I have SACD covered.

Heard SACD in a couple of demos at a local tweeter store and was not impressed. then heard DVD-A and thought the sound was fuller and more richer especially over redbook CD's. Thats why I'm leaning towards DVD-A and for just $99 I just might take the leap, even if the format doesn't survive it won't be a big investment wasted. Plus you can always use it as a video source. Sounds like a win/win situation.
As a universal player owner the "which is better" is a non issue.

They don't have a sound room that I know of. Hard to compare since you almost cetainly head different discs, unless it was "Gaucho", "Solar Energy", or "Up" (couple others),I AM NOT saying you are wrong. DVD-A has a very nice sound; I am listening to Ravel's Espagnole on DVDA right now, as a matter of fact. But you might want a better test to se if there is a difference between the two for you; and if the difference is so big that you want to do without SACD capability.
Can I offer a suggestion for the test disc?
Before, you write off SACD, listen IN MULTICHANNEL to "DSOTM". Especially the dynamic range. I don't believe I have ever heard that dynamic range on a CD.
No it was in the high end soundroom. I believe the disc was a sony SACD sampler, mostly jazz. The player was a Sony with Adcom equipment and heard also with B&K equipment. Not saying the sound was bad just thought it would have sounded better. While in their HT room I heard DVD-A with a pioneer player and Denon equipment, and thought the sound was much better then CD although it was in MC. Anyway I'm going today to buy the Panasonic!
