So we have been investigating the Pioneer 563A issues, and one of our DVDA authoring facilities has discovered that the Pioneer 563A player has a problem with DVDA discs authored with the latest revision of the MEI/Sonic authoring software. No other players seem to be affected by this rev, so our initial assumption is that it is a firmware issue in the 563A that somehow is triggered by disc authored with this latest revision. We won't know for sure until we perform more tests.I will let you know as soon as we find out more info.
Follow Ups:
Jim, could it be that the new Steely Dan Gaucho DVD-A was also authored with the MEI/Sonic software?Only the Dolby Digital tracks will play on my 563a (everything else is mute although the elapsed playing time shows on the display), and other postings here (about titles such as the Sanborn and Wilson Live discs) seem to indicate a similar problem.

Yes, Gaucho is authored with the latest authoring rev. This is why the Pioneer 563a can't play it.

I'm really glad I found this forum because I've been GOING CRAZY since my DVD-Audio discs to BRIAN WILSON LIVE AT THE ROXY, T. Rex's ELECTRIC WARRIOR and, of course, GAUCHO and Neil Young's GREENDALE all will not make a high-resolution sound on my 563A player. WTF?So what's the solution? Is there a comparable DVD-Audio/SACD player out there worth considering?

I may be entirely incorrect but isn't the European equivalent to the 563A the 565A and if so has anyone here in Europe experienced the same problems?

I have contacted Pioneer more than a month ago regarding this problem. I have many DVD-As playing with no problems, but the ones from www.hiresmusic.com are giving the little Pioneer a trouble. It is just on certain tracks where the sound starts muting (sounds like skipping). After a few seconds there is no sound at all.Pioneer US in LA have alredy bought those DVD-A/DADs and are aware of the failure. Since they are unable to fix it, the issue has been forwarded to the factory in Japan where is currently being researched.
Pioneer hopes that a new software (firmware) will solve the problem.
My own investigation/troubleshooting of the problem pointed to the Front End IC which simply stops feeding data to the PCM/MPEG decoder DSP as well as time and track information to the System Control. I would assume that the SACD drop outs (very rare) are also caused by the front end IC.
I received a voicemail last week from Pioneer asking me for more patience.
So, be patient...:-) It will be solved soon.
I had the same problem some time ago with the earlier hires releases, with my Toshida SD 5700 unit, also with an SD 4800 unit. Neither Toshiba nor hires music helped (although their later albums don't have the problem). But I discovered that by playing a regular DVD-A album without problems first, I could then play the hires music releases which had been shuttting down for "copyright protection", which was the display on my unit. Figure that one out.

. . . so please could you check this out too. I suspect, that as with the Pioneer, it's a minor firmware incompatibility -- i.e. if you liaise with Denon, it could be corrected. By the way, I've given my copy of that title to Denon UK who will send it to Japan for tests.

Thanks Martin. Our authoring facilty in Europe is aware of the Denon problem, but I will send them your post anyway. Our classic titles are authored with CubeTech authoring software, so I suspect it is a minor problem in the Denon firmware.
another A11 I tried at a local dealer played these discs without any problems.
Does the player at your dealer have a newer firmware version?

As it was early januari when I checked that out.Still waiting for a replacement. So far the odds are 1:3 against the replacement player.
With any luck the replacement has all the firmware fixes.

I just got an 563a and I can't play "time again", the David Sanborn DVD-A issued from Verve. I can play the "The Rat Pack - Live at the Villa Venice", Reprise, DVD-A no problem. The Sanborn DVD-A is recognized by the player and starts to play tracks if I select one but no sound is produced and the track will switch to the next one some random time before it is finished. I use the stereo analog outputs and tried the l/r surround fronts to no avail.

Yep, I understand. The Sanborn DVDA was authored with the latest software rev. There will be many titles authored in the last few months that the 563a will have problems with, until and unless Pioneer addresses this problem.I do urge you to call or write Pioneer and make sure that they are aware of this issue.

Thanks for answering.I drove Borders,Circuit City and myself crazy with this. I, of course, thought it was the DVDA's problem. I tried to play it on a 563a at Circuit City, where a few hours earlier I bought my player and it wouldn't play so we assumed it was the disc. I then returned the disc to Borders and nicely they let me choose a new one, the Rat Pack one, since that was the last Sanborn they had BUT I then went to Circuit City and bought another Sanborn which we tried on a Panasonic they had there and it worked but it didn't play again when I got home. Arggh! Well at least I won't take this one back now that I know where the problem lies and will use your info on MEI/Sonic to try to convince Pioneer there is a problem.
