Sorry guys, but I have to whine somewhere about this. I have been trying to install a SATA disc for more than a week now, and it drives me NUTS.I ended up upgrading my OS, losing all previous shortcuts and apps from my W2000 setup, and now it still can't find the bloody Maxtor disc that cost me a fortune. I even forgot why in hell I decided to buy a SATA disc in the first place. I think it was because it allows faster disc access for recording audio or something, now I think it was a big mistake.
Of course Win XP won't allow me to re-install Win 2000, that's just swellThat technology is not ready yet, or Maxtor discs stink (or both)
My advice: Don't buy SATA unless someone installs it for you (and make sure it works before you pay him :), because it's definitely not easy to install.
End of whining
Anyway I think I'll reformat that whole thing.
(This may be my last message :)
Follow Ups:
Just how many rooms are going to be accessing that HD at one time? Two UDMA-5's striped as a raid would give you, ooh, a coupla 100 MBs per sec, which should be enough for .... simultaneous PCM stereo to small Scandinavian town.
;)
This morning I ordered parts for a new comp I'm assembling, including a 160GB Seageate SATA drive!
I don't think there's a problem with most brands, it seems to be a problem between my Asus motherboard and the Max-f*cking-Tor SATA drive. Now I found a forum with a thread just about my problem (wow), so I'm up to my ears in all kinds of weird "flash bios" upgrades, this is looking bad (see link).
Next time I'll just grab a new Mac

Yeah, the prob seems to be a quirk with that Asus MOBO. Hardware Analysis is a pretty helpful board btw. I should have my new system up-and-running by next week. I'll report back about my SATA experience. Now it is time to shovel snow so the UPS man can get to my door!
What are you doing for fan noise reduction? Did you order a special fan / heat sink / thermal pads etc or just the usual stuff?I was looking at watercooling at some point, but kind of chickened out... now that I'm stuck with this sata problem, I'm glad I didn't do it, God knows what would have happened, lol
Best
Hi Eric,Western Digital JD series SATA drives have been very reliable here and absolutely 'plug and play.' In a RAID '0' configuration, they outperform 10k RPM SCSI in certain apps.
Sorry to hear of your troubles with the Maxtor.
Best,
Graemme,I had almost forgotten about it...
The SATA disc is now resting unplugged in my PC, I gave up and bought some good old IDE disks until I find the time to take it to the shop (for some stupid reason, I bought it on the internet and have to drive one hour to take it back to their service center)
Anyway, it will probably work... some day
Best

No fancy stuff. I'm trying to make a decent system for around $1k that also has nice asthetics. I settled on the Aopen XC Cube barebones box that Hardware Analysis and many others have been touting. I think it will strike a nice balance between performance, price, noise and asthetics.the rest:
3.2 GHz P4 512k buffer
1G pc3200 DDR
160G Seagate SATA
ASUS 9600XL video card
I'll also grab the M-Audio Audiophile 96/24 card out of my current computer. Not sure what to do about CD/DVD-RW, but I'll probably do without a DVD burner until prices come down some. However I might splurge for one of the Plextor drives. We'll see. This will be a serious upgrade from my current(1.3gHz P4) computer to say the least. It is slow, can't multitask, and sounds like a slightly muffled coffee grinder.
As for the water cooling, I just can't get used to the idea of pumping water into a computer!
No problems with installation either. Maybe one of the components (drive or MB) is defective?

There is a huge difference between an ATA and SATA disk drive. Unless your disk drive controller is SATA there is no way you will be abl eto use the Maxtor disk. You probably have an ATA controller. SATA is relatively new and is targeted at entry level business user.

It's plug and play on my 3+ year old Macintosh G4... No more fiddling with master/slave stuff.

Really, what's the improvement? It ain't plug and play on my (new) PC, that's for sure.Damn, maybe I should just plug it in my Mac, didn't think of that.
I understand that my Lynx card can work on a Mac also, and there's ProTools that works well on the Mac, so...Well, in truth I'm about to smash it against the wall, just to feel better.
